FYI, I just discovered that the Norton Privacy Control 1.0.1 (part of the Norton Internet Security 2.0 suite) ad blocking feature, if activated (as it is by default) prevents the forum "Topic" list from being displayed (only blank lines) - thus preventing any useful forum browsing, in *any* web browser! - and deactivates the "Replies" javascript (nothing happens if you click on a number): evidently, these forums features are interpreted as some form of advertisement!
Anyway, unselecting the ad blocking checkbox in NPC completely solved the problem for me...

you can use mozilla, omniweb, or icab to adjust javascript to your liking (well, less so with omniweb). they let you disable or limit javascript in their own ways. mozilla seems to be the most flexible.
that would keep you safe from js but let you use the reply and other functions.

Thanks, but that was not really the problem...
The javascript settings were at their default settings in all my browsers; the problem was that, despite that everything on my side was exactly like before (with UBB) I couldn't browse the new MacNN forums anymore because the topics links didn't even appear (in Virtual PC, with IE and virtual switch - that is, "independent" - networking, OTOH, the new forums appeared correctly). Then, I suddenly realized that there was this Norton Privacy Control app that had been installed together with Norton Personal Firewall - and disabling its ad blocking feature indeed cured the problem!
