lol neal is playing with the templates. it's supposed to take you to the first post in a thread made after your last visit. he claims he's planning on making it prettier

Clever idea (which doesn't seem to work yet), but if its all the same to you, can't we just have the ole (1-2-3) ?

People wanted this, which is why I put it in. I figure it'll look a lot better with a tiny "1" icon. I'm working on getting the 1 2 3 back also though.
It does what it says it does. It takes you to the first post in the thread you haven't read yet.

Any way to turn off the 1st unread link in the topic selections?
I find them a little annoying in it clutters up the web page here at macnn.

It clutters things up a bit but is a great feature to have right up front.
It might cause less clutter if you created a small button of some sort (perhaps in a separate column, or after each thread title), but it's very convenient regardless.

OK, I'll take them out. Some people wanted it, but it seems that no one has liked it so far.
Moving to Suggestions/Comments.

Yes, I think it's a bit *too* messy without the button, so I've removed it until I get a little "1" icon and then find a good place to put it.
Glad to know someone likes it though.

what you are seeing here, folks, is a pilot run of a new vB feature-- thread merging!
what once were three are now one. so if a couple things [chronological relationships] don't seem to fully make sense, you know why. it seems to me to be a pretty good feature, and one that could be put to lots of good use given certain propensities, but if anyone has feedback on it, please tell us (in a new thread, not here).
that aside, i would like to suggest as a place for this new small button on the left of the thread name, make the little document icon into the link. adds no extra clutter, and makes sense in terms of the function that little icon is supposed to serve anyway.

I, for one, liked the '1st Unread' feature.
If it could reappear, perhaps as an option that could be turned off by those that don't like it, it would be very handy.

Great idea! Though I'm here enough and can just look at the time to see I need even go into a thread it'll be a nice touch once implimented.
Button style would be nice. I'm sure your guys are on it.
Thanks for all you do!

Yes, good idea. A button in front of the thread name would be very clean.
Definitely a convenient feature regardless.

I think enough people like it that we're going to just build it in by default now, because writing a preference setting for it would require hacking the code, which is bad.
The problem is that having just a (1st) icon in front of every thread is sort of confusing to the newbie, and we can't have a big icon for obvious reasons. I think a place right before the thread name is a good place for it so they're all lined up, but what do people think about it being confusing? The only thing I can think of so far is to write a section about it in the FAQ, but I doubt that many people read it.
OTOH, I suppose anyone who is interested will just ask, and it's not that big a deal.

Well, first unread doesn't tell you whether there are new posts in a thread (that's what subscription and the icons are for), it just makes it quicker to get to that latest post. This can be especially convenient if the latest post you've read is on the second page of a 4 page thread, etc.
There isn't going to be any preference setting right now, but I think the vast majority of users dig Demonhood's icons anyway, so it shouldn't be an issue.
and thanks.

OK, I've just used [1st] for now at the beginning since it takes up the least horizontal space out of all the possibilities (which were (1st Unread), (1st), [1st Unread], [1st]). I think having it at the front instead of the end was a GOOD idea. It looks far less cluttered.
Also, feel free to refer people to this link if they don't know what it is: http://forums.macnn.com/misc.php?s=&...=2#firstunread
How do people like it?

Like the others, I like the functionality but think it looks too cluttered. As far as the newbies, I'm not sure they'd know what the "1st" means any more than they would an icon -- until they tried it, that is.
How about turning the sheet-of-paper icon at the left into a clickable "First Unread" button? Is that possible? That way its functionality would sort of go hand-in-hand with its informational purpose. Maybe even do a ToolTip-style popup when you put your cursor over it that would say "First Unread Post"?

Now that's a good idea. An easter egg of sorts.
I'll try that out later ... what do people think, before I go ahead and do it?

Yeah, I just went ahead and did it. Seems like a win-win situation. People who want to use it can use it, and no one else will notice.
