Sometimes, when reading commentary/posts, I wonder what the poster is currently using (type of computer, OS, Browser, etc) This would be especially helpful if the person is criticizing software or hardware.
Either have option to display (user center) or automatically get some info with each visit.

i don't think that sort of information would be as useful as you think. a user might be logging in from work, on the road, or home... and using three entirely different systems at each location.
for example, if someone who uses a windows system at work and a mac at home criticizes the state of apple's hardware, are their comments while at work to be taken any differently than those posted from home? i'd say no.
this is really something that can be left up to individual users. if that want to include that information in their profile or their signature, that's their call.

People are allowed to surf the internet while at work?!
Sure, I understand your points. I think it would still be helpful, esp when one is trying to help solve a problem, or weigh comments and criticisms.

Umm, it would be difficult to distinguish between OS 9 and OS X, as most tracking sites I know of simply refers to our machines as "Macintosh."
...unless you can prove me wrong

I agree that dynamic user info may be misleading since user may post from any machine. How about a static field along with the user info where hardware details could be posted? Something like this:
To avoid clutter, maybe have a character count limit... this would allow some flexibility for those who want only "iBook 700" and those who may want "iBook 700/12.1"/512MB/30GB", etc. etc.
Several other vBulletin forums I've come across have a similar system in place (computer type for forums like this, car type for auto forums, etc)
Funny to find this thread here... I haven't visited the Suggestions forum in months but I just dropped in to post this very idea. Quite often I read posts where having the hardware info would allow me to answer or address the issue.
