when is someone going to say something definitive about the copyright issue. months ago, one of the moderators was going to comment as soon as he had thought about the issue, but nothing has happened since then.

so, again, what material does the copyright statement at the bottom of every page cover?

It doesn't matter what the mods say...
At least in the U.S., anything you post is your own copyright, unless you explicitly sign it over to macnn.

End of story.

Wouldn't that apply to anyone though? Even if you live in Japan, when you post aren't you effectively publishing in America, since that's where the site is hosted?

I am not familiar really with copyright law, anyone know?

i will try bringing your concern over this issue to m's attention again. i can't say i expect that he will be significantly more eager to take it up than he was back when you first asked, though.
as owner and publisher, he is the only person who can really answer this question, and if he doesn't want to, it's something you'll have to just live with. maybe go find something more consequential to worry about?
of course if it's really that big of an issue for you, you do always have the option of not going on living

Yeah why not, it intruiges me too...

May I ask who 'M' is? Is that Misha, or some dude with lots of money who owns the site but has nothing to do with it? Does he ever post here?

misha was an admin who used to "work for" macnn, now he works at www.macminute.com (a pretty nice site IMO)

the M elz was referring to would be the owner of macnn, he browses the boards occasionally. his username is mkhabita or something like that (with apologies for slaughtering his name like that...)

Given that M has shown complete disinterest in this matter, I think it would be fair to say we own any content we post.

Given that, I don't think, if the matter became pertinent, he could claim anything.

Given that M has shown complete disinterest in this matter, I think he would rather not say.

Given that, I'd like to know the official answer.

Just noticed (ok, I'm blind ) the copyright statement on the bottom. Was this question ever resolved?

i couldn't find any answer in the archives. so i guess i'll have to ask M myself.

i believe the answer is: you own whatever you post, and the copyright is there for some legal reason. but that's just my theory.

My theory:

ankle_brains works for MacNN, harvesting the results from his many threads. The copyright notice at the bottom lets us know a_b's important findings belong to 'NN.

the word from the big man is that the actual text is copyright macnn to prevent other sites from stealing forum content (among other reasons). the ideas contained in the text is still yours, however.
so if you post the synopsis of the next great novel, we won't steal it from you and use the millions we earn on cheep booze and floozies.
