Yeah, there's lots of talk about the members' classification by number of posts being bogus, but I like it. Of course I don't let it determine what I think of a particular member, but I do like seeing how much some one has contributed to the forums. To me it's more of an interesting extra, kind of like some one's signature. How about something between "Addicted" and "Insane" ? Something like "Borderline Psychotic" or "On the Edge". "Beyond Reallity" would also work for me.

I agree: There is somewhat of a large jump between addicted and clinically insane.

I like post counts too...

Post counts? Bleh. Notice how I'm starting over after 1200+ posts under my old name.

You bet. As far as I'm concerned we could put away with the post counts. They suck and are often used by some 12 year olds to make others believe they're in the know.

I'd prefer a post rating. Each user can give a post a +1,0,-1 with one mouse click and instead of a post counting the rating average gets displayed.
With such a system just posting every piece of junk that flies through the mind doesn't help anymore. You can judge people by their competence/credibility record, not by the amount of spare time they have to fill the forum.

Not unless it was random. Otherwise, once someone has it out for someone else, they are automatically gonna rate -1 for every post that member makes.

That is the reason I don't like those systems in the first place.

Stick with the way it is. Maybe stick something at 5000 to make people happy?

I don't think that will have a great impact. On a board with hundreds of users and people posting thousands of messages (like good ol' Cipher ) having a guy always give you -1 probably won't have much influence at all.

I don't like karma systems. People pick on others, and it actually has an effect.

There was a system like this in use when MacNN first ditched UBB - even after only using it for a few days, it became rather obvious that it wasn't gonna work.

It works at Slashdot because there are SO MANY people, and you really don't take notice of other members. That, and karma/posts are reset every so often.

I think if post counts were hidden, there'd be less posting, but the quality of posts would rise. A better signal/noise ratio.

But who knows?

Hmm, I doubt it. On SomethingAwful, post counts are hidden from view, and that doesn't stop anyone. Getting banned and having to pay $10 again does

It might stop the silly +1 threads, but given the general audience of The Lounge, I doubt that would stop anyone either.

I really couldn't care less about how many posts I have, and I'm sure a lot of other people feel the same way. Heck, if I were a Mod, I'd change a bunch of stuff here. But that's just me.

Mods don't make changes to the forum. It's administrators that do. Although mods are asked what they think should happen, it's not ultimately up to them.

I think you can add an unlimited amount of titles based on post count. So I think a bunch of new one would be nice. As this place gets older and older, us senior member's post counts are going to be getting pretty high.

How about at 65,536 posts, member classification becomes No Life Besides MacNN Forums?

I think that would be unfair for no-english-native-speaking members. People can have a english vocabulary as a 12 year old, but still have knowledge.

You're right. Non-native speakers may have a disadvantage here. But don't worry about that twelve year old statement. When I see someone reply with spelling mistakes or "strange" sentences I don't mind. And when I read "Location: Norway" I don't expect an english professor anyway.

The twelve year old statement was directed more towards posts like "F*** you, you're an idiot.", "I'm better than you..." and other silly responses sometimes posted. It's really more about ridiculous flames than about wording problems. Hell, I have to communicate in foreign languages every day - I live in Europe. I know it's not easy.
