I keep getting an error on the forums, like every other link I click ... Also for a forum discussing high tech stuff, the board feels kinda, old fashioned. ie. No graphical smileys, slow board (on 56K) etc ...

"no graphical smilies"? Check out the next thread down. We are complaining about the new smilies, especially the animated ones. There are currently 20 smilies hosted on the board, and members can post even more as images.

I am having the same problem too. Here is the text I get:

There seems to have been a slight problem with the database.
Please try again by pressing the refresh button in your browser.
An E-Mail has been dispatched to our Technical Staff, who you can also contact if the problem persists.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

This is getting beyond a joke. Unprofessional, too.

If you're trying to run a serious website here, I suggest somebody fixes it. Heh.

Yea, like increase the number of allowed connections to the database. I imagine this is the problem.

The forums have been having this problem for some time.

What is being done about it?

There seem to be quite a few new users around, alot of traffic. What is being done to ensure regular access?

Also, just to pour some more salt onto the discussion, what is being done about it?
i look in your general direction

well ... I done an IT project on forums (dont ask) and vB (macnn forums) are the most expensive and yet the slowest and most common to have forum errors.
I am not complaining seeing that this forum is incredibly busy and any forums that has 50+ visitors on the board at any one time will struggle but the amount of errors this forum gets is serious. Perhaps the tech people from Macnn could fix it?

200+ users or so seems to be the point where we begin to experience errors (like right now). This is unscientific, of course.

OTOH, sure seems like more and more we are getting 200+ users (the bright side?).

can I ask, as far as i know, vB is _expensive_ whereas there are free/cheap types of board that are very fast and stable. Surely vB has released a patch of somekind?!

vB is only $160 for the most expensive license.

I don't think the blame can be totally placed on MySQL's shoulders. MySQL is capable of handling as many queries as this board needs, the problem is more likely in the vB software or the machine or OS on the machine of the dB server.

just my $0.02

As DH said, they've been entirely cleared up. Wasn't exactly a database error, but was a strange conflict between vB, a PHP setting that another site needed, *and* MySQL. We tried all sorts of stuff that didn't really help, but it was only yesterday that we came across this and all the errors stopped.

In short, as the ANNC says, you should not receive *any* more errors.

And re: Cipher, it wasn't supposed to be a joke. It's a pain for mods and admins browsing the site too.

Here too. Just a couple today, but every time I tried to click a couple days ago. Sometimes needed two refreshes before the page came up.

I just started getting errors again. I just had to hit reload 7 times to read a thread and reply to it. I guess there's still a few issues to be resolved?

I'm getting the errors every time I try to do anything today.

If this thing is really sending you an e-mail each time, I can only imagine how badly you're getting spammed by the forum software...

Just wanted to notify the powers that be that the database errors are still croping up. It isn't intolerable, but it is annoying. I'm sure the admins are working on a fix.

Yes, we know. I've contacted Jelsoft to ask if they have any ideas about what may be causing the errors. Hopefully they'll have something for us...

Yeah, they were HORRENDOUS yesterday until around 6 PM EST, then I tried a few things, and now I *think* they're gone for good. A number of people have said no errors since then, so it's looking good so far.
