Since it really doesn't mean anything.
And since certain mods seem to think they can control the way your post by manipulating them, I think they should go.
That way, no people posting just to get their posts up, and mods can't abuse their privlidges.
I know it's petty but hey.

I kinda like them. I think of it as more of a fun element of the board than informative. It was fun to hit green too.

All post counts really do is show how much a person has invested in the forum, but I think they are useful in that sense. I do kind of think it would be nice to seperate Lounge posts from other forums, because then you might legitimately expect the post count to indicate how much a person had contributed to helping answer people's tech questions, and how much they had participated in tech discussions and so forth. It's not possible to have a separate post count by forum, is it? That would show how much a person has contributed to a particular area.

Making only posts score that are posted in tech fora doesn´t really make it better. There are people who raise there postcounts by posting meaningless messages like "great have fun with your new XXX" (best example: Assass*n in the powerbook forum). Restricting postcount score to tech fora would screw up these in time (i guess).

Would there be a way for each member to control the display of their postcount?

This is pointless, because even if 50 people come in here and vote overwhelmingly for turning off postcounts, 2500 will immediately pop up the next day and scream their heads off.
Some people just don't like admitting to it, but most people on the boards like having the post counts. I think the member ranking thing is kind of fun, and even though they're irrelevant, post counts are probably here to stay for a good long while...

Then how about adding some ratings to people on top of post count?
Each person can rate another one once, good neutral, or bad 1 0 -1.
We could even have rating categories (tech, personality, fun, helpful).
Food for thoughts.

Post counts are somewhat enjoyable.
As for ratings, I hereby give a big, loud NO!. It's just too easy for people to use a personal grudge to rate someone poorly. (And wasn't the rating bit implemented a few years ago for a very short time?)
