It causes it to use a lot of processor time.

Why is this?

My fan kicks in, and the page edits slowly, and scrolls slowly.

At first I thought it was flash banners, but I checked this last time and they were both .gifs.

Am I the only one experiencing this?

No, see my thread below. Just make sure that the Instant Smilies and the Options boxes aren't on screen at the same time when editing your post.
