I believe basket of pups is violating the guidelines on inline images. I would expect him to get a nasty pm from tooki now as well as this thread being locked.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

I just got my first 'Image Width' PM. I think it would be nice if tooki put more thought into personalising them. I felt like I got exactly the same PM as everyone else, copied and pasted in. It's like getting a photocopied 'Christmas' letter with your name written in at the top. Just not as special as it could be

To you guys who think you're somehow being wronged by receiving a PM from me re: Inline images:

The rules are clear, and they're non-negotiable. If you don't like them, you can go elsewhere, where any-size images and sigs are allowed. The rules are there to promote readability (in the case of image width) or download size (the JPEG Orgy warnings).

If you choose to ignore the rules, then you will get a warning. If violations of the rules continue, then you may lose posting privileges.

Note that my messages are form letters: I fill in the blanks with the appropriate pixel sizes and send it off. If I have added a personal message, it will be marked as such.

I guess you mean like any other board on the entire Internet

I guess that makes this place... special

This board's Nazi image size limits are really lame

They are there for a reason. If you don't like them, GO TO ANOTHER FORUM!

We don't want ours degenerating into a juvenile, image-laden place where people have 1MB signatures and people post images so wide that you have to horizontally scroll in order to read every damned line.

It's not just "ooh let's be mean and force small images" -- there are well thought out reasons for it, and if you can't appreciate them (I know that some of our more respected members do), too bad!

re: "tooki spamming my PM box"

Bullcrap, dude.

I checked my outbox, you've received exactly one "inline images" message from me, ever, including the one yesterday.

So don't go around lying that I "spam", cuz it's not true.

If you've got a problem with me, take it up with me, don't lie publicly. If you continue, I will not hesitate to rid the forums of you.

I have no problems with sig guidlines and the such. But to threaten to ban someone when they posted a image in an image thread, just because said thread didn't say "Image" or "pic loaded" or whatever is going a bit far.

We all have our irrational obsessions though.

I don't think anyone is complaining about pic size guidelines for non-pic threads. I think we can all agree there should be one.

I think think both sides have over-reacted a bit here.

I do not threaten banning for a single image violation.

It is repeated violations (of any kind) that merit banning.

I've only been messaged once about an image violation and got threatened by a ban.

And it was in a thread about pics of bad wrecks..

Yes you mentioned the thread derailing (Even though it had nothing to do with the case in point)

I just think people are mentioning that lately, you seem like you have a telephone poll logged in your rear.

Your reaction to the wreck thread was clearly a "knee-jerk" over-reacting one.

So yes, image guidelines are good.

Getting irrationally pissy with people because they posted a image a few pixels bigger than the guidelines in a image thread is not.

Did that thread have a "picture thread" warning in its name? No.
Were there multiple images in violation of the rules? Yes.

How is there any confusion? The rules are CLEARLY posted, it should not surprise you that I enforce them. I send PMs because some people seem to forget, or have somehow overlooked the announcement with the rules.

Does it really need one? It was obvious that is what is was. If no one was spamming the thread, or derailing it....

I am not "pissy" at all. When i see an oversize image, I edit it out, add the standard boilerplate message to the post, and send a standard boilerplate PM. How on earth do you read "pissyness" into that?!? ::

Secondly, it was not an image thread: it did NOT contain any such thing in the title, which is the determining factor. If a thread does not already contain "JPEG orgy", "picture thread" or something to that effect in the title, it is not an image thread. There is no provision for "de facto" image threads. If anyone sees a thread that they believe should have its title edited to make it an image thread, they may contact an admin or moderator and ask that it be changed.

Well then too bad. They're not being changed just for you.

The rules were carefully thought out, including doing actual pixel measurements to find the maximum image width that does not create (when quoted) a text line that is too long for comfort. The rules were also designed to be considerate of the still-substantial numbers of users who connect using dialup, and the increasing number of people who connect wirelessly.

Tell me tooki, you saw that one thread WAS indeed a picture thread. Instead of going around editing about 7 posts and harassing people in pvt message, wouldn't it have been easier just to put "JPEG orgy", "picture thread" or something to that effect in the title?

People need to learn that there are rules here, and that there are reasons for them.

That's why I exactly won't do that.

If we cater to the lazy and lame, nobody will do anything here to keep it nice.

That's why I no longer move misplaced threads, I close them -- people were lazy and posted in the wrong place, because "the mods can just move it". (It also takes several more clicks to move than to close.)

That's why I don't answer people's silly questions that they could have answered with the most rudimentary google search.

So enforcing the rules is a "stunt" now.

How much clearer can I get: THERE ARE RULES, AND I WILL ENFORCE THEM!

How difficult a concept is this?!?

tooki, quit the low-carb diet. It's making you jumpy.

While I do respect the inline image guidelines, it seems to me that tooki is the only administrator who cares about enforcing them - with one exception.

So, is it possible, at the server end, to replace all attempted postings of violating inline images with links? Not only would it save tooki a lot of time, it would also make him a more pleasant person.

Another thing, this was supposed to be a humor thread. Something happened between when I left to go grocery shopping and when I got back.
