Can we have the post date in ISO format yyyy-mm-dd please? As an option.

The current display of the post date is very confusing because it pretends to be ISO with the "-" separating between the numbers but it is in American order nevertheless. Even if it were real American format mm/dd/yyyy it would be less confusing, but ISO would be best.

Seconded,

but I'm not all that sure vBulletin supports this as a user preference. We might need to send a feature request to them directly.

MacNN being a very international place (looking at the old polls, atleast) and all that.

What's wrong with having options? This confusing format is not used everywhere (including science )

It's not used anywhere that people are sane. I hate it. Kill it. ISO for me.

The ISO format uses "-" to separate the numbers and the American format uses "/" to separate the numbers. So what's really wrong with mm-dd-yyyy is that it looks like ISO at first sight, but is in American order actually. That is very confusing. If American date format must be used it should be mm/dd/yyyy.

The great thing about ISO yyyy-mm-dd is that it is non-ambiguous to all cultures (it also sorts correctly when sorted alphanumerical, but that's irrelevant here). There are people from all around the world here thanks to the greatness of Apple and MacNN, so it would be cool if we could have a non-ambiguous post date.

yeah for serious, should the date look something like this: 08-06-2004, one could as easily think it were posted on the 8th of June as they would think it posted on August 6th.
International standards should be followed

Or instead of months being numerical can we have them in written form so no misunderstanding occurs?

Add my vote too, just because having things in month day year order is retarded.

Definitly the ISO standard should be adopted. Less confusion and everyone in the world can read it wothout been mis-intrepreted.

For the people with technical minds, the ISO standard for this is ISO 8601. There is an article in ISO website which talks about this standard (without paying the 122 Swiss Francs for the standard ):

1. The U.S. date format is usually written as MM/DD/YYYY, but MM-DD-YYYY is very common here as well. A dash as delimiter should never be taken to mean ISO format. (Conversely, in Europe, plenty of people write DD/MM/YYYY!)

2. A user option would be nice. The software we're running doesn't do that. Maybe the version 3 upgrade will do it, but I'm making no promises, since I have exactly nothing to do with the forum software.

3. If we can't have a user option, I can pretty much guarantee it's not going to change, since this is a U.S.-based operation. I know we have a very international audience (this includes the moderator team), but it's still run by Americans in the U.S.

Well, but seriously, could you at least change it to MM/DD/YYYY (use slashes instead of -)? This we, it's not mistaken and it conforms with US standards.

Still no progress on this issue?
Invision Power Board & Phpbb based forums have no problems with that, it's a pity vBulletin can display date in a more international way.

How about now? I changed it to the "Dec 6, 2006" format that removes any ambiguity about what date format it is. We can tweak it rather extensively in vB 3, but what we can't do is make it user-selectable (even though that's a very obvious option to give the user, the software doesn't provide it).

Indeed, but I figured that in the Feedback forum, it's ok, since it's neither about current events nor current technology!
