I hate it when I accidentally post something (like a duplicate message) and then can't delete it because I don't have "permission" -- what gives there?

We do not allow normal members to delete any posts, nor to rename, delete, move, merge, make sticky, or close threads. The risk for abuse is too high.
If you need any of those things done, feel free to ask a moderator of the forum in question, or any administrator, to do it for you. Include the URL to the thread/post in question.

I'm more than happy to do that. Still, the question remains, "What possible violence could a person do to their own post?" The only thing I can think of is that somebody might try to cover their tracks if they are accused, say, of using abusive language. That, I suppose, is reason enough to block somebody from editing their own post.
I guess I'm just used to having that ability in other forums like xboxaddict.com and the like. My problem, not MacNN's.

Well, you pretty much nailed the reason.
Even with edits, people do just that on occasion.
Thread titles changing would be disastrous, it would make moderating much more difficult.
People would make everything sticky, and close threads by people they don't like, etc...
It'd be a mess!

Makes sense. I was thinking narrowly of just permitting someone to delete their own posts and not one that begins the thread. But oh, well --- seems like this is the way the policy will remain, and it's not unreasonable.

If we allowed members to delete there own posts, who ever started a thrad would be able to delte that thread by deleteing their initial post. Not really fair for everyone participating if one person can take the entire thread and go home.
