Why can't users delete their own accounts? Is that due to some kind of seurity/privacy issue?

Why would a user want to? Is he concerned that if his account isn't deleted, he won't be able to stop himself from posting even though he doesn't want to?

Interesting point.

Well, for one it would free up that "user name"/email address/password for somebody else to use...

The question is though, - why can't you do it? I have seen a couple of requests here over the years where members have asked the mods to delete their accounts. Why isn't this a simple feature in the forums?

So 'NN can say, "we have a bizillion users!!!" *

* Only 17 of them are active.

At least that's why places like Yahoo! and such don't let you delete accounts. I believe it's relevant when setting up advertising fees.

deleting an account would turn all the posts from that account into Guest posts. we'd also lose all information about that user (useful to look back on). it's not like we send out any emails to members, so there's no real harm in letting it sit around.

besides, we periodically delete accounts that have zero posts and have been inactive for years. i just deleted several thousand in fact.

Hmmm...what about just changing the "name" of the account, and re-setting the postcount?

That way, you would still have all the old posts of that same person, but they could change their user name, and keep their post-count.

As it is now, the only way to change your user name, is to create a new account, create a new email adress and get a new password (since the old ones are blocked).

Or you could PM an admin and ask them to do it. They've been pretty accommodating with such requests in the past.

Yeah, we've renamed many users.

I am VERY reluctant to delete accounts, because for one thing it has those negative side effects, and secondly, i am reluctant to delete an account since it's not reversible. If someone sent a fraudulent delete request, that could be terrible...

No, it's the amount of strike outs he has had this year in 1,000 attempts at the plate...
