I have trouble with an Air Berlin ad. It's not visible, but it automatically loads this address. Please kill that ad, if possible. It's really disturbing. Out of 8 pages loaded in tabs, 3 are automatically rerouted to Air Berlin without me even touching anything.

Yeah, seriously: What in ****ING HELL!?

What kind of malicious script is that - it's like domain-hijacking or something.

Get it the **** off the forums, please. That's even worse than that nasty mouse-over audio banner ****.

You won't, unless you use an ISP / proxy that is situated in Europe.
The ads are different from region to region. Nobody in the US would care about Air Berlin

Hey,

thanks for the heads up on this. it should definitely should not be opening new windows/tabs without any click. it seems strage that it is happening (and i'm guess is a miscategorized ad, since we have auto-ban on these types of ads).

However, usually copying the click thru URL (from the banner itself, i.e., cntrl+click banner and 'copy this target location' or something similar).

if you do find it before me (i'm going some of the ads manually), please PM me with the URL or just post here. i'm sure one of the admins/moderators will give me the heads up.

thanks again,
m.

That's not what was happening.

What was happening was that it would auto-redirect within the same tab, so it'd go to that goddamn Air Berlin webpage INSTEAD OF loading the MacNN page. No chance at using the "back" button, either.

It doesn't seem to be doing that anymore; instead, teh 'NN is giving me connection errors galore. Like, masses.

Exactly. I lost a few replies, because the back button doesn't seem to work either at times. Kill it!

Why is it that those ads get more and more out of control ?
Why is it allowed that they use theur own scripts and stuff ?
Can't MacNN limit it to displaying just a jpg or gif ? Don't allow those farkin' swf

I have to agree; ads beyond JPEG/GIF are generally obnoxious. :/

It's beyond obnoxious, it made MacNN unusable for me! This isn't creating business, it's destroying it for you.

I have no idea, but is there some kind of screening of ads? Or at least a way to limit it to certain things, e. g. just .jpgs or so?

Why don't you get an ad filter (like PithHelmet or AdBlocker)? The ad should still be gotten rid of, but it would save you some frustration.

I don't mind advertising.

It doesn't bother me, usually, and banners finance the sites I visit daily, so I don't block advertising. (Apart from that, PithHelmet is just one more thing to pay for/maintain through updates, and I've really got lazy in that respect over time.)

But something that actively gets between me and my browsing, like pop-up ads that I can't turn off, or those terrible overlay-ads, or this recent atrocity, will permanently put me off a site.

Add: What's wonderful, though, is that more often than not the ad banners on MacNN consist of a large "400: Bad Request" field. PithHelmet couldn't have done much more.

Has it gone away or are you continuing to see it?

And yeah, the server errors are a surprisingly effective bad blocker, LOL!

To give some explanation, the issue is that the ad company we use frequently sticks in really obnoxious ads that we don't like, and we have to go through and remove them from the rotation manually. We've had to do it several times before even though we supposedly have an auto-ban on that kind of stuff. We try to use minimally irritating banner ads, so if you find some ridiculous ad, please be patient and remember that we have to yank it out manually. Continue to let us know about them.

This is one of the better ads that's shown up on MacNN in the last several years, though:

Um,

If they're ignoring the auto-ban settings and are continuing to put in that kind of obnoxious stuff, then don't you think it's time to find another ad company???
