The new Google ads next to the "post new thread" button...

They're new, right? I haven't actually noticed them before. That's not to say they weren't there, just that I just haven't noticed them.

Anyway. Ugly. With a capital F.

Is this an attempt to gain new revenue to pay for a less lazy hamster™ ?
Or has the owner of MacNN got himself into trouble with the boys in Vegas and needs the extra dough to bail him out?

Because, you know... ...Ugly. And distastefully obvious. And Ugly. And if it needs to be anywhere on the page, it'd probably look better to the right of the NN logo.

What I find funny is how the Google ads are doing what all those banned spammers did and posting links to those free mac mini, free emac, etc. sites.

Bit of irony for the admins.

Haha vinster!

It is funny because it is true! And the ads are ugly and sad. And they get in the way. Hey here's an idea: Why don't you MacNN people put a Google ad (or even a whole BANNER ad) between every single post??! How about that?

It is the next logical step.

cheers

Alas, we forum admins aren't in control of ads in any way.

Let me clarify. It's not the actual ads themselves - it's where they are on the page. If you take a look at that pic posted by rickey you'll see that the Google-supplied ad breaks the formatting of the page better than any oversize image does.

It seems to work on a single page like this, but as soon as there's a number of pages in the thread the presence of the page navigation bar screws everything up. Maybe moving the page nav bar would make things better?

Almost sounds like we need an entire site re-design...oh wait...

Some of the adds appear to be deleted off of the new template now. Thanks!

Well, the Google ads still fudge up the threads nicely when you click to view the thread. The main forum pages no longer have the Google ads though.

every one should click them every single day and contribute to the forums. BTW the ads from google are in violation of the terms of the agreement, not supose to be on dynamic pages such as forums
Brian says (9:16 AM): I was looking at houses in Ottawa... I actually have a temptation in me to move
Jeff ******* says (9:19 AM): Eww, Ottawa is gross. It's infested with politicians, and presently, 1 Harper as well.

FAO Staff - Do you get paid more for having the ads appear multiple times or are you just hoping that by doing this you'll get more clickthroughs? If the latter, then I don't think it'll work.

I actually think the Google ads are kind of interesting. I find myself clicking on more "Total Crap"® threads just to see what kind of ads Google will put up.

I gave the staff some... strong words, and the ads are gone. Let's only hope they don't come up with an even gorier idea...

They're not *gone* to me... They have no graphics: just text.
Now they're not ugly, just greedy...
But "whatevuh"... ever since I had SpamAssassin installed into my occipital lobe my eyes skim right past ads.

I was talking about the ads in the Quick Reply box. Those are gone. I haven't had any layout troubles with the ads mentioned in the original post.

There was a time when PithHelmet was free - and didn't conflict with Safari. That was cool.

When I am asured it is copacetic with 10.4.3 I might invest...

It's been fine with 10.4. 10.3 builds had some bugs.
