Come on guys, this is going to mess up virtually every post where someone recommends someone to download any shareware app. It was kind of funny for a while, but please remove M*******e from the filter. It obviously isn't appropriate.

I believe is the word of the day. I'm going to assume they are either being pre-emptive or already got an email for the folks at concerning this thread here: http://forums.macnn.com/89/macnn-lounge/283627/macupdate-at-it-again-censorship-time/

Expect this thread to be deleted. I already posted one along these lines and it was deleted within minutes. I assume whoever it was is on a coffee break.

What the heck? Are the moderators going insane today? The word "MacUpdate" is obviously not a swear word and doesn't need to be filtered!

I'm not sure why this happened, but we've removed it from the censor filter...

Goodness. I step away for one weekend and all hell breaks loose!

How weird about MacUpdate. We don't need to help them lose customers, their own actions as of late seem to be doing a pretty good job of it!

Yeah, the weird thing is, in the OP and thread title, I used one of the various methods to work around the swearing filter so it would be evident what I was talking about. And indeed, the thread topic and the OP both said "MacUpdate" without the asterisks. Later, I came back and lo and behold! Someone had changed both and removed my workaround. But some earlier posts of mine where I did the same thing still said "MacUpdate", so it can't have been some automatic server thing.

I think there's someone amongst the moderators who has a really strange sense of humor...

Well perhaps it my paranoia - one of my better qualities but based upon some of the posts regarding the specific thread in question. People are truly up in arms over macupdate. I think we can include one of the mods in that circle of macupdate haters.

In all fairness it would be nice to have gorgonzola or DH post which mod did this, or at least notification that they have since disciplined him? arbitrarily changing filters seems like an break in the trust that the mods have been given.

I did it. When children pull publicity stunts to get attention on our forums (and others) action must be taken. It was only a temporary measure. Any publicity is good publicity, and the people who orchestrated the last few link baits know this.

Yeah, and adding MacUpdate to the swearing filter wasn't childish at all.

Is it possible, just maybe, that they just didn't want to post that widget, and not that it was part of a grand master plan to get mentioned on MacNN?

Nick, shame on you. That was childish and petty. Don't abuse our admin tools -- abuses like that make it harder for real, in-the-trenches admins like me and DH to do our jobs effectively. If you have a beef with a post, DO NOT do it in a way that impacts the proper functioning of the forums. (MacUpdate is probably one of the most-linked-to sites in the forums.)

P.S. Stunts like this ruin us admins' reputations, which DH and I have worked hard to build. Again, shame on you, Nick.

No offense, but spend as much time involved with the forums as tooki and DemonHood and you'll be able to build that reputation.

But not by pulling little stunts like that.

As well you should. Demonhood and tooki have shown themselves to be very able moderators, and this stunt was so juvenile that I would have lost all respect for this site if not for them. What's next? You decide you don't like Salty talking about his youth group so much, so you add the words "youth" and "group" to the swearing filter, lock any thread with those words and delete threads asking why you did it?

I understand that you don't like MacUpdate link-whoring, but can you seriously not see how absurd the approach you took is? It's easily as bad as their alleged publicity stunts — only it's for real! Seriously, I don't have anything personal against you and don't care for grudges, but just take a step back and you'll see it does look bad.

OMG, I've never seen an admin battle before. Strangely, I kind of feel like a kid watching parents fight - odd, I know.

What's the next step you decide to ban someone because of a baited publicity thread?

I may not agree with Tooki's approach at timse, but I give him credit in that he's always in the trenches trying. I think you lost perspective in that the forum in question was the lounge and spirited discussion is the norm. Who cares if children pull publicity stunts to get attention, why not let one of the mods take care of the thread instead of messing up the whole forum?

Just because you think its childish doesn't mean everyone else does. For the record, I'm neither a macupdate hater or supporter. I never use it, only because versiontracker suffices.

Your selfish childish (thats right you who accuse others of being immature did an incredibly immature action) act potentially messed up searches and other threads they were trying to help people.

The forum is setup for discussion, that means normal conversation should not be blocked or filtered regardless of your hatred for macupdate.

You need to grow up and let the forum work as it was designed.

For what it's worth, I don't condone filtering out macupdate either, but this particular issue is done with now, so I think it's best if we let this drop. You don't have to worry about this kind of thing escalating (as some of you have asked about) -- in the future, we'll do a better job of making sure that questionable decisions like this one get properly discussed among the admin and mod staff before they get implemented; that should ensure that stuff like this doesn't fall through the cracks and catch everyone off guard (us included).
