This is odd to write. I use this site at no cost...and feel for the tough spot the owners of this site must be in to maximize their earnings and provide content people want. This isn't about the intellitxt hubbub (which I don't care for either, BTW)...but to have a discussion re: the ridiculous animated ads.

I wish not to inflame people, I have NO IDEA what it would take for web site owners to try and control / express parameters for the ads they get...do they directly sell the space? do they get ads placed from central agencies??? I don't know, BUT:

I have a decent DSL connection, generally find my machine (dual 800G4 w/ 1.25 GB ram) sufficient for everything but heavy duty gaming...but I've watched Safari slow to a crawl while opening 4 or 5 MacNN tabs. I am no web expert, but I'm thinking, "gee, I've got this slick threaded OS, loads of memory, good connection speed, what's up?" I kick on the Activity monitor and see the CPU usage vasilating between 10-30++% usage to just have these tabs open...

I hate having a page where there are 5 instances of some stupid dog and a woman replaying. (3 instances in banner on top of page, two midway down in text.)...and it may not be the only thing...have seen instances of 2 different animated ads on one screen which is visually distracting (I sound like my dad...turn that noise down!) and even more CPU hungry.

((BTW -t who would click through on ads from banners w/o company names or info...but this must be effective for somebody to pay to place theM.))

I am aware of Safari's Saft and Pith Helmet...and will be doing some investigating along those lines, as well as the built ins to stop ad cycling/animation on Camino, FF, etc...

I wish for MacNN to be successful financially, and have enjoyed it for a good while and been casually active in the “community”. I certainly understand that they need advertisers and advertising...

- what can they do to limit ads...and who is a good judge of what’s annoying would be another topic unto itself...?
- if I run SAFT or limit animations/banners/ads in some ways am I hurting the site?
