I'd think this would have been brought up before, but I couldn't find it in the last year during a cursory search. I've been fine with the 50 private message limit for a long time, but just these last few days I've been running into the limit far too often. I was wondering if this could be upped somehow, maybe to a 100 message quota, instead of a 50 message one...?

What's most unbalanced is that the limit is merely for number of messages, without accounting for the size of the message. A two-word or sentence long message is certainly not the same as a multi-paragraph length one. In any case, I know the software is just probably set up to work this way, and changing it would probably be more trouble than it's worth. And so, I am hoping you'll seriously consider raising the limit to something a bit less well... limiting, such as 100 messages instead.

it's not possible to restrict the PM storage by message length. the only option we have is by the sheer number of messages.

that said, i raised the limit from 25 to 50 a year ago. i'm not sure that qualifies as a "long time."
72 users have 45-50 messages stored up. the vast majority have fewer than 10. if anyone else uses them to such a large degree as to necessitate an increase in the quota, they should post here.

I would appreciate a larger message box as well.

I mainly use PMs when dealing in the marketplace, but I like to keep at least one PM from everyone I do business with just to use them as references if needed. I guess I could save the data to a word document or spreadsheet, but I like having it with me since I sign in from different locations often.

So any chance of an PM box size increase, I could really use it.

As I thought.

In case you're referring to my statement:

I've been fine with the 50 private message limit for a long time
I meant that I had been fine with the 50 and even 25 message limit until recently.

However, I think that private messages come primarily from marketplace affairs, which is why most members would probably prefer communication via PM in these cases, instead of posting in public. I see the current limit rather... limiting, if just after a just a few dealings with other members my inbox gets full.

Honestly, is there any significant adverse effect on the forums/databases if the limit were raised to 100 or even 1,000 messages? I'd bet that most messages are rather short, and there are legitimate reasons, such as SSharon's, to have a greater number of messages stored.

If there are few people who need a higher limit it is because those are the people who buy and sell and make up the majority of the marketplace on the board, in addition to others who use private messages to communicate about other things with other members without needing to give out their own e-Mail address.

i don't think PMs take up much space, but i'll check with the powers that be to make sure before upping it to 75 or 100.

Thanks from me as well. Even if it doesn't work out at least I know you tried.

Now I'm showing I have more messages than allowed. I didn't even think that was possible. And, curiously, I hadn't noticed this until now (I thought I was just shy of the limit).

What would be handy would be a way to redirect PMs to e-mail instead of storing them on MacNN's servers. Or, at the very least, a feature that would e-mail the PM to you if the PM wasn't able to be stored due to the message limit being reached. After all, the system already automatically sends you an e-mail saying "BALEETED!" when that happens, anyway...
