FYI, I normally access these forums using the "New Posts" search, and this announcement does not appear in that search....

edit: Holy crap, I made close to 300 posts since March 30th that have evaporated from my post count! I spend too much time here....

The posts themselves are fine. The maintenance/repair isn't done, but capping it off with a post re-count (which will bring them back into sync) shouldn't be a problem.

Hmm...

It appears that people who have been temporarily banned since March 30 are currently unbanned as well... will a post recount fix that as well, or will people have to be re-banned by hand?

So it would seem!

Since I don't have a backup of them, I guess they get a reprieve, unless Monish is able to recover the ban database, too.

At least you didn't loose 700 posts, and drop back down to elite member from a green star forum-er. Wow, that means I posted about 700 times since March... I really do spend waaaaay too much time on here....

Ah well, hopefully this will all be sorted out soon. I swear everyone on this forum is mad on backup - ironic really, seeing as the last forum DB backup seems to be from March..

The people who moderate the forums are completely separate from those who maintain the servers. I run daily backups of my machine, and I can only point to this unfortunate event as proof of why backups are critical. (And also as why RAID is not a backup, since the cause of data loss here was corruption, which a RAID would dutifully replicate.)

As tooki said above, they're still working on the forums. Once they're done, they'll run another post count and things should sync up again, and then you'll get your green stars back.

Yay. They seem to be having major problems somewhere, the server was down again, like, 5 minutes ago.

Hey guys, i completely agree. Within the next 4-5 days, we will have daily backups of the forums (remember how the nightly pause went away??). If anyone has any mysql expertise (replication, automated backups,) and would like like some monthly admin work, for a small stipend, please let me know. Again, that was really unacceptable. I apologize, but we were admist a server transition and it caught us at a (very) bad time.

I've been thinking about this, and the solution I came up with apparently is one that is decently used: http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2.../MySQLian.html
I may be able to help set it up if need be. It should provide the solution you are looking for.

Just wait until they have the problems fixed. Then they will recount the posts and everyone should get their posts back.

Why can't people understand this?

This is a cool way of sort of doing a RAID-1 mirror of your databases, if you will. If you are looking for incremental snapshots, using rsync with mysqldump files or the MySQL datadir is a very inexpensive way of managing backups without overwhelming a server. I have backups in triplicate on different machines and different networks, because it is pretty easy to setup.

If you are interested in my help or further advice, feel free to PM me.

Are you commenting on doing those operations to the slave database? I assume when you say running on the MySQL datadir that you mean while the DB is offline.

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. Doing the mysqldump by default will enable the --opt flag which will lock the database to prevent further writing at that time. You could write a script that would take MySQL or Apache offline before backing up the datadir if you wanted.

I'm assuming that for MacNN, using mysqldump would be ideal, as backing up the datadir is more of a strategy I use for a more general overall system backup. However, this scheme also works fine for restoring a database providing there is integrity with the backup database files pulled out of the MySQL datadir.

I was trying to figure out what you were saying.

The goal, as I understand it, is regular backups without having to take the DB offline or block writing during the backup. As a result, mysqldump cannot be run on the main database. Setting up a slave solves this.

Sidenote: Raid1 is a bit level mirror of 2 hard drives, not mirroring data on different drives via rsync or any other such thing. Just for terminology correctness.

Yes, but like a RAID-1 solution, the master/slave setup will gain you a constant replica of the master database - that may be perfect for what they need.

However, what I was describing was something that would handle incremental backups. Yes, the forum would be temporarily unwritable during this time, but incremental backups would allow the admins to roll back to an earlier state. I had no idea whether this would be something that would be useful or not.

I realize there is no direct comparison between RAID-1 and database backups, I recognize the difference. I was trying to make a reference as to what would be gained with this sort of solution. If the database corrupts on the master, it will be corrupt on the replica/slave too, which is where an incremental backup/snapshot scheme can be useful.

Ahh, ok. The purpose of the slave is to be the database that can be taken offline for backups. It functions as a mirror, but since nothing uses it, you stop it, run mysqldump off it, and then have your backups. It will allow daily backups (or even more frequently) with ease.
