I don't even use a sig now, but why are MacNN users limited to a small, "landscape format" sig at the foot of the post when they could have bigger "portrait format" sigs to the left, under their member information? I know the minimum post size would increase as a result, but the creative play of image and media that seems to prevail at MacNN would benefit.
But whatever. Just a suggestion.

I would personally be OK with no sigs at all. Our posts are already signed on the left side.

The reason our sigs are kept short is to reduce vertical height to reduce the amount of scrolling needed. If we had avatars to the left (that's what they're called), it would increase scrolling.

I actually like having the sigs - it helps to identify the poster quicker.
What I don't much like is folks signing their names after their post (sorry Tooki, you happen to be handy) - like, guys, put it in your sig space so folks don't have to edit it out on replies. But hey, nobody's forcing us to come here right? So no biggie.

And yet you use one.

Ok. That makes sense.

Yeah I hate forums that allow sigs bigger than most posts.

Yeah that is a bit redundant.
Never understood that.

Especially as it is rarely their real name. So what's the point?

it would be great as well if someone has a problem with anothers sig, that they only talk to a mod. and not derail threads by bickering to the person about there sig.

Habit. It stems from the old days of Usenet newsgroups, where people would often sign with a relevant tidbit of info, e.g.:
tooki, who can't think of anything amusing to put in a signature
Using a signature field didn't allow that flexibility in the programs back then, so I, like many, got into the habit of manually signing.
tooki, who really can't think of anything good to put in a sig

Some people are more equal than others, eh?
1. Don't word things in such adversarial, passive-aggressive, conspiracy-theorist ways. If there really is a violation, it's an oversight, nothing more. From watching me, it should be obvious that I hold the mods to the highest standards of rule compliance -- they need to be models of good forum citizenship.
2. Care to tell me who it is so I can address the alleged problem? PM is fine.

tooki, how about instead of putting just tooki, how about putting: sincerly tooki; or: yours truly, tooki.

What leads you to believe he's sincere, anyway?

on other forums I belong to, members have huge avatars and eccentric sigs on the bottom of their posts as well. Totally unneccesary, I like it the way it is now.

I agree, I've been on forums that a single post consumes nearly the whold screen because of avatars on the left, and large sigs on the bottom. A total waste of space and quite ugly.

they also limit the number of posts per page to something like 15, so you're constantly going to the next page and waiting for it to load.

So you couldn't be bothered to manually type the two dashes and a space that denoted the beginning of a sig?!??!?
Now I'm beginning to understand this "it takes too many clicks to merge a thread" business.

I really like the current sig rules. They're perfect.

For an example of what Sigs Gone Wrong would be like, check out Neowin. Great forums, BAD sig guidelines.

I've seen some DOOZIES of bad sigs in some forums. In Dell's "Community Forums" you can see sigs that take up a third of the screen. In some computer tech forums I've visited sigs take up more than the whole screen! Obscene, that's what it is. Little pictures also lead to more creativity-take a look at things like starman's sig, or Rickey's or MINE! I think creativity is good.

200x50 (under 10k, non-animated gif) is perfect. I feel it gives you enough "canvas" without bothering the other users.
