it seems to be a regular occurrence for members, especially newbies to macnn, to ask others on how much they could sell their computers for. in the end, it ends up that other members have to do the research for them (google, ebay, craigslist) when in fact they can be doing it themselves in just a couple minutes.

i think such a policy should be included in the general forum rules.

also, since i've always used this account, i'm curious if the general forum rules are shown to the user during the account sign-up process? if not, i think it'd be much more effective if it was.

not pissed or perturbed, but it's annoying and to have someone else try to appraise the value of someone else's computer is a waste of time since it's the owner and only the owner that can assess the condition of their computer.

I agree, I'd also recommend any technical questions be referred to google to as most of the answers are available there too

Seriously I think you see a spike in these type of requests because of the new MacPro, but once the MacPro hubbub dies down these question will also dissipate.

Back to my somewhat tongue and cheek answer, and that is, if your do get those type of questions banned, where do you stop. What about the ubiquitous what type of memory should I buy questions, or should I buy a new mac now question, or even what type of configurations should I get. At somepoint people will stop posting here because they cannot post here.

Basically either move these questions in the marketplace (why they're not allowed there this is beyond me) or just ignore them.

I think we need a confined n00b space. Lock them up in there for the first, uhm, Eleventy billion days.

We should just make a MacNN FAQ and link anyone who asks one of these questions there.

other post topics that are along the same line but not as bad:

1. buy now or wait? most of us on the forums are mac-savvy so we know exactly what we'd do if we were in the same situation.

2. buy a mac or pc? if someone is asking that sort of question, then it's safe to say that the person is only casually interested in the macs and doesn't care about mac os.

i'll try to think of more.

If you don't care about the Mac OS, you are uninformed.

I think that n00bs that are posting about macs as if they were PCs should be banned or flamed furiously. I hate those ***holes!

Me too. And I hate it when they say MAC and I-POD and iTUNES. Especially iMac G3 and G4 users when it says right in front of their face "iMac" not I-MAC or IMAC or iMAC.
