The auto-URL-title feature fails with question marks in a box if special characters are in the title. Example:

Madonna in Düsseldorf: Gekreuzigt, aber nicht verdächtig - Kultur - SPIEGEL ONLINE - Nachrichten

Please fix!

What do you mean here? The new system somehow fails to parse out the question marks?

I think he means that the Auto-URL doesn't understand special characters and puts question marks in place of them.

Yes, that's what I mean. I can type "Düsseldorf" and "verdächtig" without a problem, but the auto-title feature replaces the special characters with question marks.

But you can still access the post, right? I mean does the URL fail or is just cosmetic problems with the URL? Can you point me to an example of URL that looks inappropriate/fails?

What he means is that when he pastes a URL with foreign characters in a post, the automatic conversion to [url]...[./url] fails to recognize and show the foreign characters correctly. See the URL above. It should show like this:

Madonna in Düsseldorf: Gekreuzigt, aber nicht verdächtig - Kultur - SPIEGEL ONLINE

See the difference to the parsed URL above ?

Didn't I in my original post?

Madonna in Dsseldorf: Gekreuzigt, aber nicht verdchtig - Kultur - SPIEGEL ONLINE - Nachrichten

CNN.com - Sunday school teacher dumpedfor being female - Aug 21, 2006

What I think happens is the following: The MacNN forum is UTF-8. The auto-title script seems to grab the title from the linked page but does not consider the text encoding of the linked page. So if the linked page is not UTF-8 as well, all special characters get messed up. The auto-title script needs to convert the text encoding in such a case.

It's probably related to the problem with ® and â„¢ symbols that we've been complaining about for weeks.

The URL parsing is pretty cool.

Well, you can turn it off when posting.

And that web-site has an insane title. I hope Google downranks them for that.

Ok, so Vbull is disavowing any knowledge of any related bug until we go back to a standard configuration. I will try a few other avenues for support now.
