Why aren't bans publicly reported?

Right here, in the feeedback forum.
I know this has been discussed before, but I'm not sure what search terms I should use to pull that up. Besides, things change, what was "we don't feel like it" yesterday may be "sounds smashing" today.
If this and the other niggling questions I've been posing of late are irritating I'll gladly help assemble a Feedback FAQ.

yes, posing questions should be answered, like this one:
why are there white guys on "myspace" pretending to be black and not even speaking understandable english?
Alex
before he changes it

to be serious though, if you were banned, would you want the entire MacNN community to know about it, and why you were banned?
i'd think not

I want to know why imitchellg5 was banned but i'm sure he doesn't want it to be public, my idea is that there could be a small table/list with banned users and a short explanation, e.g
Rob Thread Pooper/Starts Arguments.
It may be harsh to post a list of banned members or reasons, but if they deserve to be banned then erm... this sentence is going nowhere.

Interesting idea. But the problem with it is that these announcements would spark even more discussions.
You know, banninations at MacNN are like referee decisions at the soccer world cup: no video evidence (i.e. later review) are allowed to change the prior decision, no matter how the outcome of later evidence is. That's just the way it is, like it or not.

The VAST majority of bannings are for people you've never heard of. They offer good prices on Nokias, iPods, Xbox, PlayStation 1, 2, and 3. They sometimes offer an "iPod Vidoe" for sale too, not sure what that is. Many of the prices seem too good to be true. For example, latest price on a Playstation 3 was $150 I think. The reply email links tend to be in the hotmail or yahoo domains when it's not an IP number that maps out somewhere in the 3rd world.

Ok, reader50, you are right: spam banninations should not be reported.
But how about temp bans or perm bans of forum members that are known (e.g. postcount > 100) ?

Ask the person who was banned.
As far as I, and I'd assume most people are concerned, it's really none of our business why the banning ocurred.

Because they'd get even more talked about then they are now, and the mods would have to start answering our questions all the time.
And somehow, someone would get banned during a discussion of why someone got banned.

Now that isn't true. There was once I was banned for 2 weeks and it got turned into a day and a half because other mods disagreed.
But anymore it seems the lounge is ran like a slum.
A month or so ago when I complained it took 4 days to get Rob banned I hoped things would change. But no, it took even longer for him to be banned the last time.
I think certain admins or mods aren't interested in doing the "job" anymore, but don't want to be replaced at the same time.
We were told we would be getting knew mods as well. But that hasn't happened either.

The funny thing is I see mods interacting with Rob in threads; they know he's banned but they post replies, its like they just don't want to bother with him at least until he acts up which isn't long.

Well I wouldn't bother either unless he was wreaking havoc upon the forums. It's pointless banning him because he'll just come back. IMO, I think we should try and start Rob on a clean slate to see if he behaves any better (A clean slate would mean him being recognized as a proper member).

No to be honest I usually never report him till he acts up. And usually he isn't banned till 3 or 4 days later.

It's been done before countless times.
He acts no differently.
Back in the olden days of MacNN Rob used to get banned because of his strong anti-gay stance. Then when he found that was simply getting him banned too quickly he started on other things. Which of course the mods are more lax on.

Only because the people that can ban him aren't paying attention much anymore.
More then likely Rob gets reported soon after he posts. If he was banned then it wouldn't be as bad.
Now I know they say "We have lives you know" and I agree. They should have lives. But no one is stopping them from adding MORE mods to make sure someone is here most of the time.

Ding Ding Ding! Most of the active mods are in the US or similar timezones which means they'll all be asleep/working at the same times and not able to moderate the forums.
This is why someone in a different timezone, like me, would be helpful as it means there would always be someone able to look at the forums.

I don't really care who it is or where they are from. But we do have mods that aren't US based.
I just think we need more.

I was never anti-gay. I was just 'anti politically correct'. So I called 'lame' things gay. Not out of hatred for gay people, but out of hatred for the politically correct mindset.
Then tooki started talking to me on AIM, and why he felt that me calling bad things 'gay' can hurt the gay community, and why he was offended. Since then, I have barely called almost anything gay, unless it's in jest. I have no problem with gay people, so I don't want to hurt them when I can just use another word.
You're wrong Kevin. Sorry.

The reason I keep coming back is that it isn't cool. I had over 500 posts with my last 'big' username, and then I was banned.... why? No reason. I wasn't misbehaving. I wasn't calling names (more than anyone else), and I wasn't causing problems. I was just another member. But then, out of the blue, out of nowhere, I got banned for 'ban evasion'. I'd never heard of it before, because in my then 6+ years of macnn experience, nobody had ever mentioned it. As far as I knew, you get banned, you get a new name, who cares.
That's exactly the way this place worked for a very long time.
As for my original bannings, I feel that the banning of 'cash68' was unfair. I had well over 5,000 posts with it, and I 'behaved' to keep that name. When I was banned unfairly over a comment that nobody else would get banned for, I lose respect for the moderation/administration. If I truly feel that the ban of THAT name was justified, I'd wait it out. But nope. It's unjust. So they can keep banning me, and I'll continue to come here. Also, since they ban me now regardless of if I'm being 'civil' or not, I really don't care about their rules whatsoever.

Well you seem nice enough...
Maybe it's time to have an adult discussion with the Mods to see if you can work something out. The fact that you keep coming back here obviously means we're the best forums

sean I would LOVE for Rob to be able to come back and act his age. But even readin this thread shows he still hasn't grown up.
Oh and Rob, I apologize. Not anti-gay stance, just saying derogatory things that was homosexual related over and over again when you were asked to quit many times.
People in the forum took at as anti-Gay because you were being so belligerant about it.
Just like you are now with your refusal to leave even after you been banned because you seem to think just because you don't think it's fair, you have a right to be here.
You seriously need a big dose of reality.
You are just lucky MacNN is too lazy to do anything about it.

This is why Rob would have to learn to control his opinions.
I think the heads/mods of macnn should try to make an agreement with him. On the other hand, Rob could write a thread about himself so we can try to understand him better.
