If a thread you posted in (a lot) has been deleted does the post counter on the side go down?

Thx.

Excellent question. I know that by policy we don't delete threads with a lot of posts if we can avoid it (certain exceptions apply, such as the one a while back where every third or fourth post was ****** pictures). That's to avoid users thinking they're losing it when they don't see a thread they'd posted in. More frequently we delete offensive/obscene/stupid and insulting posts, or at least edit them to show that.

This is now a Good Question for the admins and above...

I don't think so, because back when I first started coming here, my first post was a thread, but I needed it deleted, and my one post didn't go away.

Deleting does decrement post counts. The test for this isn't generally visible to normal users, but we admins/mods see it all the time in deleted spam threads, where the spammer's count is zero since we soft-deleted all their posts. (We admins/mods can see the full contents of soft-deleted threads.)

By the way - why do we need post counts again? At first - years ago - I thought this was a pretty accurate way to identify quality posters from the masses.

But basically with so many people having the majority of their posts in the Lounge, where anything goes, what's the point? The number is meaningless.

Unfortunately quantity != quality.

I too though at one point is was a good indicator but so many people post so much inane chatter that the vaule has decreased.

There's another board I post on that makes sure posts in the 'lounge' areas don't count toward the overall post count. I think that'd be a good idea.

That indeed would be an option.

Does vBulletin support that ?

I don't know.

I'd love to hide post counts entirely, and just have it display the user level. (And I think those need to be adjusted.) Post count whoring has been a sore spot for a while, if you ask me.

we tried the "lounge posts don't count towards your post count total" thing a couple years ago.
people complained. a lot.

we're just going to hide the post count and increase the number of member levels (as tooki said above) instead.

Do we get any say in the names of these levels?

Maybe the title could reflect where the user posts. Make it not only about the quantity but the ratio of posts in different forums.

For example: mostly hardware forums + political lounge = "Suspected Terrorist"

And if more than 90% of your posts are in the Lounge, you'll get the title "post whore" ?

How am I supposed to read that? "Lieblings - sechs - nummer?" Or am I supposed to read it as "Lieblings - sex - nummer?"

EDIT: On a related note, my mother said once when she lived in Germany she heard an old woman counting with her grandchildren: "Eins, zwei, drei, vier, fuenf, oopsie (German equivalent), sieben, acht, neun, zehn..."

No umlauts because I'm at work on my Dull box, and I can't be bothered to look up the ALT code for "UE"

I didn't know the United Emirates had an ALT code—live and learn, I guess!

(And my work Dull box has no problems with the üüüüüüuüüüü )

"Unlaut?" Is that the anti-umlaut?

I enabled the Greek keyboard layout in Windows, and I know how to do Spanish accents, but I do lots more work on my computer in English, Greek and Spanish than I do in German. (English and Greek are my primary languages, German I learned in high school, and Spanish I learned in college. My father is Greek, my mother is American, they met in Germany, they live here in the US now, but still speak mostly German and some English to each other).

In high school I participated in the German Exchange program. The student whose family I stayed with in Germany stayed with a different student in America because my family is not a "typical American family," and with all the broken German my parents speak to each other and the Greek we speak with our father he probably would have thought we were totally verrueckt!
