Not to mention it's a picture + extra big line of text, which technically isn't allowed.

YouTube-videos don't slow down page loading. You first have to click on them before they start to run. A modern forum should have them inline. Linking to them and opening them in an external window just adds screen clutter.

For people slower connections, linking would be a fine idea.

I'd quite like it.
Ideally done in a similar manner as spoilers, as in you click a link and it loads in the page, if you don't click the link -- the video doesn't appear.
Probably unpossible though.

And looks like somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed

I still haven't heard of a viable answer to why linking doesn't cut it either,
Basically, its just because you can and screen clutter. For the screen clutter issue, that's really not a huge issue is it? One window opening up for a video does not equal clutter.

Well, I do agree it'd be nice if YouTube offered a simple image preview option -- so you could just have a jpeg + link to the YouTube page, rather than embedding the flash.

The movie itself doesn't. But if you go to ANY site with an embedded youtube movie, it takes a sec or two to load the mechanisms that DO load the movie when clicked.

Now, imagine a page full of different youtube movies.

YouTube speeds up my iMac's fan considerably even when the video isn't playing. I don't think it should be embedded. Links are fine.

We already have a tag {JPEG INSIDE] for picture threads. Do you think we need one for videos? [YOUTUBE INSIDE]?

Just link to them. How hard is that? It's actually quite easy.
