Great. Another person not supporting a site they spend a lot of time at.

Peter: I'd pay for a ad-free site.

On Topic: I was getting the full page thing a week or so ago, but not lately.

Just switched to my Windows box and viewed it on IE7. I didn't see any full-page ad showing up, but that's odd.

I don't mind going to a site with ads. But I do mind when you have obnoxious ads like those which play loud sounds when you're not expecting them to, or ones that pop up right in front of the content you're trying to read.

It's crap like that that forces people away from sites in droves. Or, you block the ads. Either way, the site loses.

I'd pay for an ad-free experience, too.

You have a point, but then if a site has those obnoxious ads I usually am not interested in their content either. The cool part about MacNN is they actually listen to their audience and try to filter out the obnoxious ads. That makes them very respectable in my book. And worth the slight intrusion of ad space.

I generally don't mind the ads. I don't bother filtering, mostly because I have found some of the ads of value.

Full page stuff is annoying though.

Yes, they get points for trying to filter out obnoxious ads, but it's still a reactive process. They continue to use an ad service that continually forces them to accept obnoxious ads that have to be removed after the fact. They claim they have "no control" over that.

I've been to other sites that have ads and on some sites I've never seen ads as obnoxious as some of the ones I've seen here. Why can't MacNN use those ad companies??

The adds on Macnn and all its related sites has really got way out of hand now. Theres just far too many of them, and they are huge resource hogs as well.

Who ever had the bright idea to slap so many of them all over the site really needs a kick in the head.
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

They used to, but after feedback from viewers the administrators were wise enough to remove it.

This is what I respect about MacNN. They walk a fine line between making money and pleasing viewers.

Nice.

PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB drives | Your Digital Life, Anywhereâ„¢

Tons of open-source and freeware apps you can keep on a USB drive. They are completely self-contained, including Firefox, Gaim, and OpenOffice.org. These are all, however, for Windows.

It looks someone has released an OS X version of Portable Firefox, though:
Portable Firefox OS X — FreeSMUG

Use FEBE to back up your FireFox profile on your home computer so that you can have all your extensions, plugins, bookmarks, skins, and prefs ready to put into the portable version.

PS. Google AdWords all the way. Unobtrusive, match the theme of your website, text-only, relevant, and no obnoxious moving GIFs/Flash.

Thanks for the link to portable firefox. However, I really don't feel like scrounging around in the back of our school's dusty computers to find a USB port. Also, I've noted that they don't work well with Vista (which is what I use most of the time).
