People want to discuss something that has already been discussed; so they subjoin a new idea to an old thread. What's the big deal?

Relevance? Would a 2 or 3 year old topic and it's discussion be relevant to the new post? Or was that new post something like..."yeah, me too". Those should be locked.

Another common one was; "this solved my problem, you should try spam!" Those should be locked too.

In order to have just one rule, all zombies get treated the same way. No guess work; just lock.

I agree, I have yet to see a zombie thread be relevant.

I'm scared of zombies and kittens. That's why.

Zombifying a thread is bad because then we get 50 posts arguing with somebody who pissed off five years ago. If a conversation is dead, don't try starting it up again just because you're interested in the topic; start a new conversation. It's so much less confusing that way. If the old thread contains a lot of information you think is really good, feel free to link to it.

Not only that, a lot of said threads are done so to blow the hot coals of a old flame on.

In other words, most zombie herders have nothing really better to do with their lives.

We have a rule about this precisely because of the reasons people have listed here, plus a couple of others. Like -- How often do any of you actually READ the date on a post? I look at it, but I've responded to zombies accidentally because they happened to be about an even year (or two, and once even four years) earlier. It's confusing when you see a thread about something you thought was settled a long time ago, too.

We do make exceptions for when a thread can be revisited. If new posts are truly relevant AND provide new or revised information (look at Eug's thread in the Lounge about housing prices for an example). But otherwise it's a royal pain to be confronted by a thread title that sounds familiar and it's obvious you've posted in it...only to find out it's tripe that you forgot about a long time before.

What about lounge threads, in cases where members wouldn't be using the thread as a research resource? I can just see members pointing people to the current "Boo-yah" thread the next time somebody boo-yahs in the future

A thread's a thread. It has been my experience that zombie Lounge threads are more confusing when they appear than zombie tech threads.

That is true.

The reason for that is that the Lounge posters often don't bother to read through the whole thread, and don't even pay attention to the date. So they start posting irrelevant stuff.

There's a cat zombie in Pet Cemetery that's pretty scary.

Irrelevant even for the Lounge! That's saying something.

Re-using old threads and staying on topic there makes more sense than these monster threads with five, ten or more pages where you have to search for valuable posts like for a needle in a haystack.

Recycling is good.
