Main Page comments vs. forums re:logins

Why is it that when I log in to post a comment on a story on the main MacNN page it removes the persistent login for the forums (i.e. I have to explicitly sign in to the forums again after posting a comment).
Similarly, logging in to the forums removes the persistent login for comments on the stories.
Why can't the persistent login stay across both (i.e. you sign in to one, you're automatically signed in to the other)?

You are right, it doesn't make a lot of sense. 
I think they are running the two sites on different hampstors (i.e. servers).

the main page comments section is being totally rewritten to integrate better with the vbulletin software. sorry for the delay in a response on this, but i really had no idea what was going on until recently.
