So I compose a long, amusing post bristling with wit and scintillating with intelligence, hit Submit Reply, and what happens? I'm told that I am not signed in. How could I compose in the first place if I weren't signed in? Sometimes the post is published, sometimes it is lost forever.

Agreed. This is most likely a cookie problem. I've got the same issue with another site.
