OK, I gotta say, I'm kinda really sick of the lazy moderation on this forum. Essentially the mods function to simply lock posts that users decide to harass others in, instead of ever dealing with the actual offending users. This results in posts that are more meaningful than being soft core porn all getting locked. It's a major reason why I don't even bother posting here anymore.

I don't get it. I haven't seen hardly any threads getting locked these days.

How should they deal with offending users, specifically, and on what basis?

Well if a thread gets locked, that means there's obviously something going on that they don't want happening correct? So if that's the case, tell people, due to your actions you can come back in five days, and then ban their user name, if they reregister a different name, 20 days, plus banning their IP addies which will work typically with most things excluding AOL users... not that we probably have that many users from AOL.

Oh, this discussion has occurred a million times over the last two years. It doesn't seem like people are coming back to fight very often or anything. It seems to me like the Lounge is at the calmest it's been since I've been here.

Salty, there are no perfect solutions. For people like me, I've said it many times that I hate it when members get all pedantic about infractions and rules being bent, and I hate these sort of governing structures that attempt to outline the official sanctioned way of lounging. However, I also realize that it is overly idealistic to do away with these structures and expect good results, so I've become far less vocal in advocating more of a sense of anarchy around here.
If you tightened things up around here and became more strict in moderation, you'd piss off these people which would inevitably result in more bickering, members participating in armchair modding, and people trying to game the system. In the process, you'd piss off a lot of other people in the process who don't want this sort of environment around here.
The point is that there is no magic bullet, no perfect way of moderating... If we are to go by results alone, it has been quite civil around here as of late in comparison to years/months past. So, perhaps we shouldn't change anything... We have lost some membership, but hopefully over time we'll acquire some new blood.
