Am I doing something wrong, or has there been a change?

When I post a link now, the title of the link no longer gets posted:

That checkbox is in the Advanced Reply dialog - "Automatically retrieve titles from external links".

The box was checked by default, which has been high on my list of annoyances since the feature was added. Even if an OP unchecked the link, should you quote their post, it would pop back on for the quoted text, unless you manually turn it off each time. Result: quotes that did not match their originals.

I finally managed to hack the code file, correcting the text spacing for the box, and changing the default condition to 'unchecked'. But if you still want the board to insert random text into your sentences when you post a simple Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more! link, the option is available.

I noticed that too. To prevent spam links maybe?

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

I agree with the change, the automatic conversion was more of a nuisance than a help.

it also made links obnoxiously long.

I see. That makes sense.

That will also correct the problem where the title you want to put is a URL. IIRC, sometimes this would also get converted, even though you didn't want it to be.

I noticed that sometimes, the auto-titling is still active.

E.g., in the following post I made today:

I have to say, this sucks for those of us who are Quick Reply whores. I don't see the option available there.

I didn't realize that the quick reply automatically results in changing the link text.

That *IS* annoying. We should get some consistency.

I hacked another line of code in the file before doing this. It appears to work as expected now.

How do I turn it back ON for the quick-reply box?

There's no option in the User CP.

****ing annoying to just have my settings changed - I *really* appreciated that feature for linking to research/articles/older threads/etc.

Members have not been able to delete their own posts. You may be thinking of the window during which an OP can edit the thread title (currently 20 minutes).

The title-fetch behaviors are global settings, and can't be set per-user, or even per-post. I can turn it on or off entirely. With a bit of hacking, I can set the default condition for QR and Advanced separately. But the setting isn't preserved across posts.

It was most annoying to have to go Advanced on every single reply that had a link in it, in order to turn titlefetch off. I got in the habit of including full link code in every post with a link, just to retain control of the result. Fixing that behavior has been near the top of my list for the last couple years, and most other people seem to agree that it should default to OFF.

Would it be possible to hack a checkbox into the quick-reply area, too, so that you don’t have to go advanced to decide?

No doubt it's possible - all the code is within reach. The checkbox is inserted into the Advanced page by a plugin; I'd have to figure out how the page-inject code works, and add it for the QR editor as well.

I'd thought of that, but didn't want to promise anything - the code file in question has no comment lines. Fortunately, the variable names are somewhat descriptive. It will be looked into - a QR checkbox is the logical solution.
