That might probably become an interesting discussion in the feedback forum. The vBulletin Software should offer a mobile apperance like for example Google does.

There was discussion in the feedback forum about this, but nothing ever happened. I would really like a mobile version though.

I know this isn't the place to post it, but I would love to have a mobile version too. As it is, I end up using another 'mac rumor' board as they have a mobile version that's just more convenient. Tend to visit macnn only from my desktop because of that.

vBulletin should be able to specify style ids as noted here:

I sixtheded that request...

This site is somewhat handy: www.wampad.com
On your device just select "Website" from the pulldown, enter the url, and it converts it to a mobile friendly format.

You can access and browse the forums, but can't post.

I was more surprised that the mods hadn't moved it yet than where you started the topic. Both are good categories, but it feedback might get it noticed more by the mods who work on the back-end of the site.

Let's just say that some of us are busy, even during the summer.

I should point out that this is a non-trivial issue. Sure, vBull should be able to handle changing styles, but those styles have to be defined, coded, tested and debugged, and our lovely users have already told us we do poorly at testing and debugging changes to the forums.

So this is a very good thought, an interesting and potentially valuable suggestion, and maybe something to be tackled.

Just do a public beta and everyone can report bugs before instead of complain after the release.

Simple.

Easy.

There's already a fairly decent skin for vbulletin that is optimized for the iPhone. Mactalk.com.au is using it. Go check it out and make use of it!

Related question - I'm now an iPhone owner, how do i log into MacNN on mobile Safari? I can't get the log in pop up box thing in the top bar to work properly, and I can't find any other place on the site with a proper log in page instead of the pop up box.

If you try to reach your PMs or the UserCP from an uncookied browser, then it will pop up a login page. Try each, see if it works on the iPhone. If it does, bookmark it as your forum start page.

Any updates on using the skin I provided? It's a great temporary solution.

I don't bother going to non-optimised sites anymore on my phone

+1 for the mobile theme request

To think I have provided a perfectly iPhone skin for vBulletin ages ago and nothing has happened. Guess no one at MacNN has iPhones

I didn't make it, just provided a link to a publicly available and fairly acceptable iPhone skin for vBulletin.

Hi - - erik - -,

No one has rejected the theme you recommended. Please take no offense just because we haven't implemented it or any other solution yet.

Thank you for the recommendation, if you have any others, they're welcome also.

I am not taking any offence, just wondering why this hasn't received any priority for such a seemingly minor change (basically adding in a pre-programmed stylesheet) when it would benefit so many.

I’m thinking perhaps the rather large amount of tweaks and oddities added to the standard vB template might make it less of a major task to apply even a mobile skin. It would probably need quite a bit of tweaking just to be functionable—or that’s my guess, anyway.

That seems reasonable. But if so, some sort of transparency on why it is taking so long and if it's even in progress would be good.

The drivel below is my personal opinion - it's got nothing to do with what might or might not be going on 'behind the scenes' (I haven't got any information on that).

Now, why anyone would think the implementation of a mobile version is a trivial matter eludes me entirely - it is by no means a 'just upload a new style sheet, get feedback & fix the bugs' sort of deal.

By now (at least for the forum regulars), it should also have become apparent that there's no full-time development staff taking care of the forums, all the mods/admins are volunteers, and those few who do have the skills required to implement such a solution have lives outside of the MacNN forums.

If any one person were to take this on, it would require at least one to two weeks to properly implement such a mobile version - ask yourself if you'd be willing and/or could afford to donate that kind of time.
