I remember they were part of a post that used to be a sticky but is now buried deep in the past. Can we put those somewhere that can be easily found?

They were posted in the theme beta forum during discussion, but I'm not sure if there was a public sticky. Also, the crazy-stars were not part of the redesign set, I had to recreate them a few months ago. Here is the current set.

But only those that the mods and admins feel are worthy of them will actually get any.

Custom stars are given out for service to the forums. Outside of staff members, there are just 7 people with them today:
4 retired staff members who kept their stars.
effgee, did the redesign.
rickey939, helped during the redesign I think - you'd have to ask someone else for the details.
Cipher13 (insane stars) - his total got messed up, this was a fix rather than for forum help. But then, technically they aren't custom either - they look much like those of besson3c and turtle777.

I think anyone who has added traffic to the Gaming forum (i.e. the Dead Zone) gets custom stars.
(This is quickly devolving into a "everyone gets a trophy" type situation.)

Also, I just saw the "You must wait 30 seconds between posts" pop up in the "Quick Reply" area instead of reloading the page into the Advance editor to tell me that.

No, he got them after the theme beta testing. It's been a while, but I remember rickey being a pretty big contributor there. Anyway, exceptional service in the beta forum was indeed the reason he got custom stars.

Some are just more custom than others.
For example, since my name is "Railroader", I should get little trains.
Since Gossamer's name is "Laminar", he should get little pictures of ponies.

How about custom stars for long-time forum veterans?

I'd be in favor of this, but there are two problems.
1. It'd be hard to agree what constitutes "long-time." Is it that the person registered before a certain date (say before Dec. 31, 2001) or the person has been here for a certain amount of time (say 6 years). And if that person creates a different handle, do the custom stars go with the handle, even though that handle is new? I have a username dating back to 2001, and Dakar, Railroader, analogika, and plenty of others aren't on their first name.
2. This means a lot of work for the staff. I'm sure there would be thousands of users eligible for custom stars (significantly fewer would be interested in them, of course), and a whole new set of rules would have to be put in place regarding size, type, appropriateness, etc. for the custom stars. And how often could they change? Do you get to choose stars once, and you're stuck with them for the next 16 years, or can you change them on a whim?
I think doing something like this would be fun and make things a bit more personalized, but only if it's not too much more work for the staff.

Not that I think the staff has any interest in the added work, let alone should they, but I think limiting it to the 15k (and maybe 10k) folks would be about the only way to go. Anyone who has been here since, say 2000, and has participated regularly will probably have hit at least one of these milestones.

We have occasionally handed out custom titles to memorable members. However, I had to dig into a DB query to get a list - even the admin controls don't offer a way to find members with custom titles.
Excluding staff-related, board-related, and bannees so bad they got a title, we came up with 9 members:
bOOzo Addicted to Themes
Brad Oliver Aspyr Staff
cszar2001 Photo Architect
daimoni Occasionally Quoted
moki Ambrosia - el Presidente
philzilla Occasionally Useful
Prince Kasper's Side-Kick
rbarris Blizzard Staff
swiz GUI Punk
Looks like it happened quite awhile ago, since the names and titles aren't ringing many bells.

What? Surely you remember philzilla, too? I remember moki and daimoni, too—and cszar2001 is that German guy, right? I think I have vague recollections of seeing the name swiz before, too, though I can’t recall who it is (must have been in the Mac modification forum, going by his custom title).

Zimphire had a custom title too — "King of Nothingness," if I recall. I assume it got obliterated when he was permabanned. (Zimphire = Kevin, for those who don't know.)
And yeah, moki has posted this year, so you may have seen his custom title around.
BTW, I'm with turtle. I was around long before I registered. Actually, when I first started posting here, there wasn't required registration. I wish I could remember what handle I originally used (I know it wasn't Chuckit) so I could find my first posts.
