Sorry! This thread is too old to bump. Please start a new thread.

Lame.
Really.
Sometimes, just because a thread is old doesn't mean it's not relevant.

Agreed, if the topic is still relevant there's no reason to start a new thread.

It's largely an antispam measure. There's a great tendency for spammers to target older threads (more Googlejuice, I guess?), so after what's meant to be a reasonable amount of time, threads are automatically locked. It also prevents that annoying thing where somebody alive-agains a thread and confusion ensues and people start arguing with posters who haven't been here in eight years.
Is there a reason you don't want to start a new thread and just refer to the old one? Are there specific threads that are a problem?

I think that some old threads that get locked should be opened again, per request.

The main reason for not wanting to start a new thread is because of the progression of the original one. Starting a new thread kinda takes the fun out of seeing how the original one has evolved.
No biggie.

for threads on tv shows, sometimes there is a hiatus. It would be a pity if the lost or bsg threads were locked.

They're not locked exactly. The general forum rules forbid bumping zombie threads after 6 months, and replies are prevented in most forums after 1 year. The time limit varies in some forums that might need longer windows.
For example, Feedback is set to 2 years. Marketplace is the only one that actually clips at 6 months. The grey area between six months and where the forum steps in allows the local Moderators to decide if the bump was OK after all.
Stickies are excepted, as are staff members. If there is a good reason to bring an old one back to life, ask your friendly local mod. If they agree, they can bump the thread. You can post, they can optionally delete their post. The thread will be resurrected.

It would be kind of ridiculous if I start another Herpes thread, if the old one is perfectly good.

Lounge zombie age was recently extended to 2 years in order to accommodate seasonal or annual threads.
