I wouldn't mind if they trashed UBB alltogether, it's horribly slow. Stileproject Forums had the same problem until they switched to vBulletin now it's as quick as this OF and the Something Awful forums.

I know hey tried switching to vBulletin once... a while ago. BUt, something bad happned. I don't remember exactly what the problem was but I don't think it had anything to do with vBulletin.

But, yes, I agree. UBB blows doors and needs to be booted.

I don't see anything wrong with UBB.
The server just isn't powerful enough.
Just like you can't complain that OSX runs slow on a PM6100-66 with 8MB of ram (yes, I'm exaggerating, but I hope you get the idea), you can't complain when the server doesn't have the power to run it.
The new server is being setup, it should be in in a day or two.

Yeah, UBB is slow, but it seems to have a lot more features than other boards I've seen (XMB, PHPBB, and another which I can't remember).

My name's ...uh... it's a bummer man.

I think UBB and vBulletin are both good products. However, I vote for vBulletin for ONE REASON: much quicker and broader searching functions. Many people come here to troubleshoot their Macs and searching multiple forums on UBB can take too much time.

The boards load VERY fast on here, about as fast as yahoo's homepage (0 seconds) So I'm not complaining

I helped transition another board from UBB to vBulletin, and the speeds went up on the same server hardware. The users had been complaining about the slow and incomplete searches UBB cranked out, and vB took care of that as well.

We tell newbies to do a search before posting, but sometimes it just won't return the results you're looking for. OpenTopic by the UBB people runs great too, and the search is pretty spiffy. Overall, I think it's fine, my only gripe is with the search.

Since when? I've used vBulletin boards, and I always notice how much nicer they are than the UBB ones. For example:

- searching through all the forums is instant instead of taking 10 minutes

- you can subscribe to a thread and get e-mailed when it's updated

- it has a "Go to first unread post" link for threads that is nice

- it tells you when a user that posted something is online

- it allows you to e-mail people without their having to make their e-mail address visible to spambots

And, of course, it's fast!

I already have a vBulletin license and would be happy to donate it.

I don't know much on how to install vBulletin because I've always paid vBulletin to do a professional installation for me. It usually only takes them 30 minutes to a hour to install it, if they have all the information about your server they need. I've even had it installed on a virtual web hosting account, not a dedicated server, and it ran very smoothly.

You can also customize vBulletin to the Nth degree. So much so, that vBulletin actually has a contest each month for the best looking vBulletin forum. No real prizes are given, but you do get some recognition. Sorta like winning yard of the month I guess.

I don't have a gripe with UBB for MacNN's forums... And when I search, sure it takes a little time... but if you have somewhat of a clue what forum what you're searching for is located... then it narrows that time down
