OK. I don't know if anyone else has suggested this (or if you have read it here, and I know I make a few myself, but what if......

What if you only got moved up a rank each time you reached, say, 20 posts with 10 or more replies (not replying to yourself either). or 10 posts with 20 replies or 1 post with 100 replies, a rare beast indeed. Posts could still be counted, but if your post count reached 1000 and you were still a junior member it would only show an inability to post anything of value.

i'd just like to point out that a system such as that you suggest would be completely useless and furtheremore self-defeating. case in point: the Word Association threads. One of these was the longest thread ever in on these forums, beating the "cipher/reader no life" thread by a factor of 2. Moreover, both of these threads were started by "senseless posts," and furthermore acted as the spawning grounds for, together, over 2000 similarly senseless posts.

on the other hand, there does seem to be an increasing number of one-line postsand such. chat room stuff. perhaps a permanent link to the MacNN chat room at the top of the Lounge would be helpful? dunno... putting AIM SN as a Profile field, with a button to send and IM to he poster of a message? not enough people using AIM and the always-open AIM Buddy Chat "MacNN Chat".
i confess to having not been around the Lounge in a while, and the flow changes so quickly, but i'm just sort of rambling ideas, and will stop now.

ps. i'm yawning right now. a good big yawn.

OK. So when you hit 200 or something the value starts to decrease, wouldn't that be fun, if you could actually be demoted for posts like 'word association'

Whatever your feelings on word association, it would be an interesting exercise to construct a network map of how the various associations intertwined. It might shed some light on the inner thought processes of MacNN users...

What happened to the most recent iteration? I recall it being started but don't recall it's closure...

Did it ever get over 20 pgs? (like the second one).

Anyway, I admit to using the Word Association™ a few times to boost the good ol' post count

It didn't get that big, and was closed by Misha with a simple statement of "Over" or "Finished" or something - very well done. Hehe.

I think that is a capital idea, as long as members used it for off-line discussions and didn't dilute helpful content from the main board. Yawn.

That'd be pretty easy to do - just add another image/link to the portion of the reply area with the profile, email, edit and quote buttons, with the following HTML:

<A HREF = "aim:goim?screenname=Cipher1387"> for example.

I think there is also this:

<A HREF = "aim:addbuddy?screenname=Cipher1387">

If those are wrong, sorry, its off the top of my head...

There is actually a Hack for this at http://www.ubbdev.com (hack adds functionality for ICQ, AIM and Yahoo messenger), and this is also a standard feature with vBulletin.
