I'm beginning to think that anyone who posts that OSX is too slow or buggy for them to use must be using a different method to post here, because if you think OSX is bad, you couldn't possibly handle these boards over the web. They are very often down. When they are up, they're slow as molasses. And lately I've been getting a repeating "session_j is undefined" error all the time. Tonight I'm enjoying the "disappearing threads" issue - a total of 4 threads showing up under OSX - General.

Maybe Scott_H could spend less time getting frustrated by OSX and a little more debugging and installing new servers on MacNN.

BTW - the speed issues happens under all browsers (MacOS 9, Classic, and OSX) and the session_j error I can only confirm under 9.1 IE 5.

First off, this belongs in the Lounge. Not OS X General Discussion. Second, I agree with you, but OS X is still slow. Yet, not as slow as this. MacNN should be correcting this problem of speed as soon as they have the new forum server set up.

Heh, alright. But pretty much the ENTIRE fora is affected by the strange things happening and the slowness of the fora.

Well, that's actually because of the mod_perl installed. While making the forums faster, the mod_perl creates problems with showing all of the threads and giving weird appearences to pages.

thanks, dogzilla, you made me laugh. Nothing like another Macworld... rumor, speculation, and no boards.

What are you talking about??

I see all the threads. I also see OS X 10.1, dead people and G4 Cubes.

I have noticed a disturbing increase in the frequency with which moderators, such as Scott_H, and MacNN in general are being criticized and attacked in the forums. Personally, I would appreciate it if people would focus on providing constructive suggestions. Attacking a person or organization, especially one that is providing you with a free and useful service, doesn't seem necessary or productive.

Yes, the forums have been slow and somewhat buggy at times. And, as a user you certainly have every right to report problems that you experience and offer suggestions for resolving them. But, you really can catch more flies with honey. I suspect that a more positive attitude will help you get your problems resolved more quickly and efficiently.

I hope it gets fixed soon. I was looking forward to the crescendo of rumor and speculation as MWNY approaches. I've grown fond of the combination of whining, speculation, personal attacks and occasional bits of useful and entertaining information that is the MacNN Forums.

Octavian, it is a free and useful service, if someone spotty and frustratingly slow at times. However lets not forget those little nuggets at the top of the page. (Sign up now and save $10. Win cash & prizes. Want more traffic? Need traffic? Take online surveys. Same great prices. Your click helps support MacNN.)

Any other good apple forums out there?

Yea yea yea we know we know. They're working on it. If it makes you feel better I raised a red flag what with MWNY coming up. I read that they are working on new hardware. Also something about a heat sink not fitting on a CPU and taking it down. So, yea, it's being worked on.

Maybe Scott_H could spend less time getting frustrated by OSX and a little more debugging and installing new servers on MacNN.
That is SO not my job here. They wanted to make me an admin and I said "no way".

I'm going to move this one over to Suggestions and Comments. Click through to find the thread.

Oh please. Lighten up, Francis. I don't think what I posted qualifies as an "attack", and if MacNN (and it's moderators) can't handle such a minor jibe, then I think we're all in trouble. Besides, I really don't think Scott_H or anyone else who works at/with MacNN would disagree that there are probs.

Well, I chatted with Monish and he said a new server is definitely in our future. I am going to push for a dual Athlon machine

Access speed is better, but still sporadic.

What do I do about disappearing threads? Only 5 show up on G3/G4 forum for me.

Even more frustrating/annoying is if I don't click a forum real fast, I get one picked for me.
And I really dislike JAVA and cookies, but that's another story.

Yeah, we're going to have a new server in place sometime next week (we're working on it so it will be finished before MWNY, obviously). It will be a dual Athlon 1.2 GHz machine with a gig of RAM and Ultra 160 SCSI disks.

I know it's coming a hell of a lot later than it was supposed to -- but that was beyond our control and at least the specs are better now.

sorry, but stick with us for just a little longer

OK, MWNY is over now and everything should be golden, right?
I smoked two cigs and drank a cup of coffee this morning waiting for the main page to load. Couldn't get to the fora, had to come in to work before lunchtime. I use Netscape 4.78 on a DP 550 on 9.1 and 512k DSL.

Now I'm at work on a peeeecee(P-III 500), running Internet Exploder using Win2k Pro and the main page and fora fly. WTF? Daily fluctuations, Red Code on your new server or just Qwest DSL trouble here on my end?

Zack

Dual athalon? What about a nice dual G4 running OS X? Mac Addict switched their servers over to Mac OS X, proving it does run well on a high-load server

These forums are unbearably slow both at home (cable modem) and at work (T1 line). It's been this way for several weeks now. I don't even bother to read threads here anymore. I've been over at xlr8yourmac and macaddict.

I do miss these forums though
Dual G5 2.3 GHz Powermac, 2.5 GB ram, GeForce 6600, Belkin 4 port USB hub,, SyncMaster 21" LCD, iMic.

All of MacNN sites are buggy of late. Cant load osx.macnn.com half the time. Get contains no content error. the forums are slow as dirt and I have a 125mb connection here at work. When you post a comment it doesnt show up on MacNN. For instance. the os 10.1 report the other day. only one comment ever showed up and it said 96 were posted. This site is losing my interest. I havnt been posting as much since it is toooooo slow. I am starting to goto macminute.com more often now. Hopefully MacNN will get their act together and fix the servers. problems have been getting worse and worse lately. Trash the AMD's and invest in some dual 800 g4's. Throw OS X server on there and your sites will never be bogged down again. Might want to up the ISP speed too. That is also a problem. or better yet akamai your site. Do something, do anything. just make this place faster. One can not take this slow of a site for much longer.
