Why?

1) AI's fourms down for weeks a time
2)There is a newer version of Ultimate bullitin board
3)AI is dead will resume soon 21 days is not soon
4) MacNN fourms are much faster

I've sent an email to Nick DePlume at ThinkSecret asking him if he can/will setup a forum area so that AIers can move there.

What do you guys think? Its not AI, I know, but even for me the MacNN/AI situation has reached the limit.

We can start a new world with the AI Refugees!

EVERYONE email at ThinkSecret to convince him! I havent gotten a reply yet (sent it 30 minutes ago) but we should really get the point accross that we need a new 'insider' area and ThinkSecret is doing a KICK-ASS job lately. Daily, correct updates.

ZO

PS the email is info@thinksecret.com DO NOT SPAM HIM

We're planning to do just that. We're planning on having the new server on Monday and that week AI should have a proper home.

The whole thing will be back. I can't say anything for the front page (I haven't discussed that yet) but the forums will definitely be back up at a stable, reliable hosting service on a rock-solid server.

There have been a million things going wrong in the last few weeks (AI being one of them) ... please just give us some more time. We're going to get AI back up on a solid server with some solid bandwidth if you just stick with us a little longer.

But if you're really frustrated and want to leave, I'd be disappointed, but I fully understand.

Apologies for the delays in the hardware, once again.

In the spirit of the age-old running gag at AI:

GO GORGONZOLA GO!

Seriously, though, thanks for your informative replies to people's queries about the servers. I haven't seen another admin as helpful as you have been in this situation. Gracias!

natro301: nihilist said "wasn't full of 12 year olds" not "wasn't 12 years old." Big difference.
The server made a boo boo. (403)

I'm not 12.
In fact, I'm almost 18.

I'd also like to see AI forums back up, as the people there really are talking about stuff, which is actually hardware and software.
I can't wait for them to be up.
I may actually register, too

gorgonzola: Thanks for the good news. After many months of talk about a new server, I sincerely hope for a successful move on Monday. Let's hope Monish and the gang manage to put up some new pre-MWNY content too!

So you're planning to run MacNN and AI boards on the same server. Will you continue to use two different domain names, i.e. forums.macnn.com and forums.appleinsider.com, to emphasize the different audiences nonetheless? I certainly hope so.

Cheers,
Escher

escher- I believe that what Gorgonzola is saying is that the AI forums are going to get the current MacNN forum server, and they are getting a new one...

or so i've heard...

That would seem to suggest that the AI forums will remain at AI, and the graphitey goodness that we all know and love will be back to normal.

In the words of Mandricard...

Hope springs eternal.

Maybe I gave you the wrong idea, but I meant the Monday *after* Macworld. We simply have no people free to do it this week (i.e. move the stuff over to the new server and install it in the facility) because we're flooded with news all four days of Macworld.

So the week after Macworld is what was decided (earliest possible date at this point). Let us hope there are no further complications.

I'm very sorry to hear this.

I'm sad that AI hasn't been around for these past weeks, I'm sad that MacNN hasn't done anything in the meanwhile to fix the problem, and I'm sad that AI as a website and a community seems to be dissolving before my eyes.

Gorgonzola, I appreciate the updates you've given the AI forum members, but unfortunately, it looks like you are the only one that cares. I'm well aware of the memory leak with the AI forums, but these problems existed for 3 weeks with reboots to the Cube hosting AI seeming to temporarily fix the problem.

While the new server is coming in, why hasn't MacNN tried to keep the Cube online for AI forum members to post? Even though AI has come down before most major shows in the last year, the biggest time for the website and forums has traditionally been before Macworld NY.

Since the beginning of the year, it has seemed to me that AI has been down more time then it has been up. As a long time member and poster, I've been disappointed with that. With the NFN situation going on earlier this year, I almost gave up on AI completely, thinking that it would be repackaged as a compliment to LinuxInsider.

Thankfully that didn't happen, but MacNN hasn't been much better.

I look forward to the boards being back online, but am disappointed that during AI's busy time when we could be getting back a lot of lost valuable members to community, we are still facing the AI forums being offline.

We have tried. This hosting company that manages the Cube does not answer emails (emails bounce, most of the time) and are extremely difficult to contact. I was trying to get SSH to the machine but they have to put it up once so I can use it. Monish has also been trying to get a hold of them and it's simply a PITA. Even their website is down. Take a look if you don't believe me: www.reprahduce.com .

If you're asking why we haven't done anything about this -- well, we're doing something about it now. No more of that hosting company, no more unstable server. We're putting AI on a stable server with good bandwidth in the same facility that nuke and hole are (MacNN forums and news).

While I can't promise anything about rumors updates (as that's a whole separate can of worms, which will be dealt with after this server business is finished), I can promise that after this server is in, AI Forums should look a whole lot healthier, where they have decent people to keep an eye on them.

I understand your frustration, and it's unfortunate that it had to come to this, but it's also important you understand the entirety of the situation.

Just a little longer.

HTH
