I am really tired of seeing people priding themselves in making the first post on each and every article, and then not even having anything to say. Is there some way for you to filter out comments that contain the words "first" and "post"?

We're working on it; we should have a new, easier to moderate comment system in place in a few weeks' time.

I was just coming to suggest this. You would think that it's becoming SlashDot. Also I noticed that loading the comments section is slow.[/LIST]

That's good news Gorgonzola.
I'm on holiday at my folks house on a very slow dialup and just wasted too much time loading a bunch of juvenile posts after the story about MWNY hardware. First post this and all your base that... jerks.

This is becoming utterly ridiculous. Today was the worst yet. The comments under the news about VRAM and the new iMacs takes the cake. As you all are probably well aware there is a link to a pornographic picture that is hidden and keeps popping up new windows...yeah...I know about the javascript fix for IE. But the point is that I'm at work. When I'm at work I'm surfing in a semi comatose state. I had to turn my monitor off immediately before the VP came walking by looking at my computer screen. I absolutely refuse to look at any of the comments on the news page until MacNN says they have attempted to fix this.
What's worse is that I recommended MacNN to my family for helpful hints and news about Macs. 2 years ago I never would have thought that this site would turn into what it is today with the comments situation. I still think the forums are 1st class though.
Please please do something about this before my family comes screaming at me for leading them to a porno site.

I made the suggestion a while ago. They should do like other sites do. Make a section in the fourms and just link to it for each article. MacSpeedZone does a good job of this.

I've personally never found the news comments intelligent, informative, meaningful, or at all worthwhile save as an occasional source of amusement. and I don't see why people get so hung up on them—why people don't just read the news on the main page and ignore the comments if they cause so much psychological trauma. Nevertheless, the complaints about them have been increasing in number and force. While there is something very nice about being able to have the free open news comments, there is real cause for concern about "abuse," and as I myself have just freely admitted, as they are now, they to a certain degree lack usefulness. OTOH, I think that having the news comments on the main page free as they are keeps that crap from entering the forums in the way I'm sure it would without the news comments (though probably to a lesser degree). Your suggestion though, Roofus, is an good one, and will be taken into consideration. As always, thanks for the input. Though sometimes it may seem we're... "not as responsive as Batman ," we do appreciate it .

At least before newsfactor happened, the posts pertained to the topic.

It's probably easier to police the boards for such trolls that the system that is in place now. That's another reason I like the Slashdot mod system, although no system is perfect.
I think the comment section is important for many reasons. But if the Trolling continues, it might be better to remove it altogether.
