What are the ignore lists and how do they work? I've added somene to mine but I still see all their posts.

you mean the Ignore List link on a member's profile page? ubb has features for integration with AIM. if a member has specified an AIM SN in his/her profile, then clicking "Add Buddy" or "Ban List" when viewing that member's profile will automatically add that member's AIM SN to your AIM buddy list or ban list.
