Forgive my ignorance concerning servers, but is no Mac offering up to the task? I'd like to think my favorite Mac site was being run by a Mac.

Honestly, when you're just running raw Linux and some server tasks, it's infinitely more convenient to have standard server software running on it. Having to deal with things not compiling on Darwin just adds a gratuitous level of complexity to everything.

Also, if we're just running Linux, the raw horsepower difference makes a huge difference, and we have far more horsepower this way. Macs are great for Photoshop, but this server is twice as cheap as the fastest Mac server available, and it's far faster at what it does simply because it has two 1 GHz chips and 2 GB of RAM available.

We always use the tool appropriate to the task. Linux is just flat-out better for running servers with at this point in time.

i dread to think how much 'fuel' this thread will give to the pc users that seem to have invaded this board lately.

are you saying that macnn, with all it's advertising banners, can't afford a G4 Server to host this thing on? what do those banners pay for then? someone's crack habit?

maybe you'd like us all to buy you a real computer for xmas, huh?

Do you still not understand what gzl is saying??

Use the BEST tool for the job! Just because it is a mac forum doesn't mean it has to be run on a mac. What's the point? So we can say to the pc users "Oh, look at our Mac website. It's forums are run on a Mac, so we are 1337."

BAH!

What's the point?

When a PIII with Linux is better for the job compatibility-wise and price-wise, why does this keep going on? I mean nobody, not even the admins sees the machine. What would be the advantages of using a mac for just running a server?

HOW!?

It still makes no sense that a site should be running of a Mac just because it is about a Mac. If it is THAT big of a deal to you go hang out at MacAddict; they're running 10.1 server.

Why can so few of you get it through your heads??

Jeez. I'm sorta starting to debate whether I'd even LIKE to be associated with people of such a zealous nature as Mac users; "I don't care! Macs are better for everything!"

Get over it. Nothing compares to a UNIX/Linux box with an x86 compatible processor and cheap hardware for use as a server.

Lowest overhead; best operating system; cheapest and fastest hardware.

Get over the fact that Macs do suck at some things, and that "PC" hardware is better value.

Even if MacNN *COULD* afford to blow $5000 on a Dual 800 G4 with OSX Server; why would it when it coudl blow that same $5000 on two dual 1.6 GHz Athlons with over a gig of RAM each?

It's simple - more bang for the buck. So even if the software wasn't an issue, WHICH IT IS, Macs would be out of the game.
