i like the text in the new logo, except for the different font used for the X. the crossbar is too thick... so, a little of column A, a little of column B.

Your wish has been granted. =)

(I've always wanted to say that.)

We'll probably go with Synotic's new logo, and we actually did get a new server and upgraded the other two existing ones.

The news server (main webserver) has been upgraded from a single 550 MHz P3 running RedHat to a 1.2 GHz Athlon running FreeBSD 4.5.

The database and email server has been upgraded from a 350 MHz P2 to a 500 MHz, and has also been upgraded clean to FreeBSD 4.5.

The third server (miscellaneous services like IRC as well as MacGeneration forums) has also been upgraded to FreeBSD -- no hardware upgrades. Weren't really necessary.

The forums box hasn't been upgraded because it doesn't need to be, yet. It's a dual 1 GHz P3 running RedHat (we'd install FreeBSD on it, but it only has one drive, and frankly the forums are running well enough for us not to bother at this point in time -- it will be upgraded eventually though).

What you'll see come out of this is greatly improved stability and reliability; the servers are also now more highly optimized and secure, as well as more stable. This was a big upgrade, and there may be some minor turbulence over the sites on the network as they get settled in, but this was the big kahuna -- our servers aren't screwed up anymore, they're really beautifully configured and running like champs.

(The upgrade is why they were down for so long, actually.)

Just thought I'd give that issue a rest, even though it wasn't the original topic. We'll probably use that new logo, though.

Enjoy!

I like both logos, but I think the aqua effect is just a fad and ppl will get tired of aqua soon. I have to wonder though, do we need to keep a seperate page for OSX now?

definite improvement on the logo - aqua button-ish, correct X, and tighter kerning. nice tweaks.

Well it's for a Mac OS X page, would you rather have this?

As for having a seperate page, yes I think so.

Right now enough of the news is distinct to warrant a separate page. It will eventually be merged into the main page, but not for a good while yet.

The new logo would look so much better (its great right now) if the highlights would continue to the far left of the graphic, instead of stopping several pixels short.
