i post a lot of images but all of them are web formatted and within my self-proposed guidelines of within 400 by 400 pixels.
most of the time much smaller and sometimes bigger if the situation arises
what i propose is that you should tell people not to post monster images....they kill my 56 k connection! people always reply to them too, and that means i have to dl them twice!!!
i just think that some etiqutte should be in order

With the exception of sig files, I think everybody should post links to images. When I started the yummest people thread, I didn't mean for everybody to post pics of celebritys. At first I just posted a link. Then later I posted a small 200x150 pixel image of Annabeth Gish.
If they can't post a link then 400x400pixels sounds very reasonable.

I think you guys complain too much
Chill down, even on a modem the wait isn't bad, if it doesn't look good, just don't bother loading it

I think some form of image size guidelines would be a good thing.
The thing that I hate most is that when I'm browsing the forums using my iBook, where I'm restricted to 800x600, someone posts a really really large (read wide) image, which pushes the width of the page beyond 800, and the text in messages above and below then wrap to longer lines. You end up spending ages scrolling left and right if you're unfortunate enough to have only 800x600 available.

Most of the time I try to link to an image that's already hosted on someone elses server because it's a real pain in the @$$ to download an image and then upload it again to my apple.com iDisk. I really have no idea what sizes some of those images are, the ones I do actually upload myself I try to keep it reasonable sized.
I don't mind the notion of a guideline standard for image posting, but if it becomes a reality at least do those of us the courtesy of letting us know what they are before we get brow beaten for non-conformance.
Incidentally I'm also on a 56k connection and I rarely have issues with image size knocking me off-line.

what? how the do i know it looks good if i don't load it? i'm using explorer and it doesn't gimme the option to stop loading one image. i know some of the browsers like omniweb let you but it's too much trouble.
Mike,
you're fine. i don't think i've ever seen you post a monster 800 by 800 image before...
generally, i alter my images so that they do something but i do link too sometimes.
beb,
for the purposes of your thread...i think it's ok.
most people are fine...it's just always.... ALWAYS.....one guy who posts a 800 by 800 image and everytime i got to that thread, i spend a whole minute downloading it and whoever replied to it

actually, how about just telling people not to reply to huge pics. that would be good for me. because seeing 2 or even 3 of the same pic is annoying

More efficient is to mention at the beginning of posting an image thread to post links to images or linked thumbnails; generally, moderators edit out huge images and replace them with links, but some threads require too much editing for it to be worth it.
