Whenever I use the search engine, I'm always surprised it hasn't been improved yet. Here are my proposals:
1) Why don't you use checkboxes to select which forums to search? Now you can only choose to search one forum, or all. Or add at least options to search f.i. all osx-forums.
2) Please order the list of forums alphabetically!
3) When searching all (or multiple) forums, why can't it do the search in one time? Or why can't it display the results that have been found already? Now I get to see that there are 10 (or whatever) results found, without being able to see them.
Another solution would be to built up the table with results while searching. You could display the results found in the first forum, then wait for results of the next forum, display them, etc. Note that to be able to display the results while not ending a page, you should end the table in which the results are displayed, as a table cannot be displayed by the browser before it is ended. But you probably know that already, as you are doing the same with all pages.

Yes, not being able to search more than one forum at a time has been bugging me too. I'm going to look around for a hack to do that.
UBB's search is notoriously inflexible.

Look at the openforum of http://www.arstechnica.com. It seems they use the same forum, and they have this already.

No, they use OpenTopic, which is a different Infopoop product that we're not interested in using for a number of other reasons.
I did search around for a hack to improve search functionality, and all I could find was "search by member name," which, although useful, doesn't really solve this problem.
Sorry. I'd fix it if I could. It's a "UBB Thing"™.
If you do find a hack for this, though, please let me know! =)
