To the folks at MacNN,

I've had to force quit IE four times today at your site:

it hung once on "email_3.gif" (multimedia forum) and three times on "tri.gif" (main MacNN news site).

I understand your frustration in trying to identify the issue, but it has gone on way-to-long not to be resolved. If you're running this site as a business, I suggest you take it down "now" and "fix" it. To continue on, "as is", will not only drive loyal viewers to other news sites but further damage your reputation.

It's "time to bite the bullet". Good luck.

Regards,

T H Allen

I haven't had a lockup in IE since I set my browser cache to zero. I'm on broadband so it's not that big of a deal to redownload everything everytime. I do agree with the previous poster's sentiment that the site be fixed ASAP. No threats, but I would hate to think how many first-time visitors came to the site just prior to and during MWNY just to have their browser lockup repeatedly. That's bad for repeat visitors....
Yeah, about those TPS reports, didn't you get the memo?

Yup.

I've had to force quit 5 times in less than 15 minutes. It's become ridiculous.

Get a real browser, and stop wasting your time with Internet Exploder.

What about us OS 9 users? It's not my fault that the suggestions of people here screwed my OS X installation <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

I don't know where the issue with the forums lay with regard to hanging IE, but I was kinda expecting the issue to go away after the change to vB, but since I logged in a short time ago IE has hung on me twice while loading gif's (one was profile3.gif, cant recall what the other was).

I switched the browser cache back on again yesterday when I couldn't access the forums and have since switched it off again.

MacNN forums was the only window I had open at the time and was the only place I'd been since I opened my browser.

Is it possible that the issue still exists or is it likely that this was just a fluke connected to the change to vB and the issues that your ISP was having?

Argh, and this hasn't shown up as a recent post either!

WTF? I posted a reply here, and this thread stayed near the bottom of the list, and the forum index shows Synotic's as the most recent post.

We have a few leads from Microsoft and will post on them in a few days after I confirm a few details with the engineers working with us on the issue.

Part of the problem is definitely a bug in the browser itself, and although I'm sure there's something specific in our code it doesn't like, I don't really see what we're using that's rare or uncommon. The fact that turning off browser cache basically solves the problem is supportive of this.

In any case, the temporary fix that we know of right now is to disable browser cache; hopefully that will carry you for the next several days while we sort out the problem with MS.

You sure it's not something to do with your image server? If it's hanging on the images, I doubt it'd be the HTML, more likely how the server is communicating with the browser when sending the images.

Just my uneducated opinion... hey, it's as good as the next guess, isn't it?

MacNN isn't the only site IE has problems loading, at least for me. MacNN is the most problamatic site for me, but there are at least 4 other sites I visit where I have problems. The one thing all the sites have in common is a ton of graphic images.
MBP - 2.33GHz C2D, 3GB RAM, 256MB VRAM, 160GB HD
PB - 1.5GHz G4, 2GB RAM, 128MB VRAM, 80GB HD
PM - Dual 1GHzG4, 1.5GB RAM, NVidia GForce 3, 2x 80 GB HD

Apparently the IE browser crash problem is *greatly* reduced under Jaguar (Mac OS X 10.2). I've been using it for several hours and have no crashes (even with the cache turned on . I'll post more over the next few days. I know that MS, Neal, and others are working to solve the problems and I believe it may be partially related to our use of thttpd to serve our images. We tried to move off thttpd to Apache, but it completley overwhelmed the server. We expect new hardware and new bandwidth (moving ISPs) on or near August 17th, so me may be able to move to Apache for our images after that transition.

Sorry for the problems and keep sending us reports of problems, so we can pass them along.

best,
monish

ps I just noticed that we are slightly behind on our versions of thttpd, so I'll be upgrading that right now

Update: Unfortunately, i couldn't upgrade thttpd, but the IE/MacNN/Cache issue is gone in Jaguar. Not a single crash after 2 days. Wonder what changed.
