At first I thought it was a cool feature, but now when I reply to somebody I usually have to go in and strip out the reply they were replying to (which is irrelevant to my reply). And I have to squint to figure out which UBB tag goes with what reply so I don't delete the wrong stuff.
On balance, it's a pain in the tuckus. Sorry.

Hmm, yeah they're starting to annoy me too, perhaps a hack that placed 2 reply buttons with each post. "nested reply" and "reply"?
Is that possible?

Time for a bump! I was happy to find this discussion here but quite surprised to see that there were so few posts in the thread. Nested quotes seems very problematic to me - I would even venture to call the "feature" a bug. And I'm not slamming the mods and admins; I just want to bring attention to this matter. My forum productivity has taken a noticeable hit because of all the times I've had to manually strip out and correct the quoted text I'm replying to. Moreover, I have to believe this is a bug because the final nested result looks so poor. Can this be taken out and/or be turned off in preferences?
Now then, this is slightly off the subject, but since we're talking about replies, I really like the reply behavior of the AI boards - the reply page loads a frame with the full original thread that's being replied to. I like the MacNN style of appending an abridged version of the thread, but I feel the AI version is superior. One reason is the AI version preserves the page in its regular state; another reason is the AI version doesn't discontinue the display when the thread in question becomes too long.

They do more harm than help, IMO. They break the flow of the pages. If people weren't too lazy to edit some of the quote out, it wouldn't be so bad. People are lazy, though, and usually quote an entire message to add one dumb little line.
Who wants to read a post that's 10% content and 90% quote? <img border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" title="" src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" />

I've tried in vain to make one and I can't even figure out how to make a nested quote.

I think they're all bad.
Perhaps there could be a limit to two nestings...
