To bump or not to bump, that is the question. I'd like to revive the really good Linus-ZFS-HFs+ Lounge thread from last year, but I'm wondering if it would be better to create a new thread and reference the previous one. Is there a guideline on bumping old threads?

I tried to bump a 16-month old thread a few days ago, but they wouldn't let me, so I did this instead....

Yes, it seems like the bump protection is a new thing.

I don't like it.

Start a new thread. Link to the old one. Take it from there. My 2¢.

For some threads, it's absolutely idiotic to start a new one, just because some random time period has passed.

Be that as it may, I don't think this is a topic worth losing sleep over. If you can't bump just start a new thread. No biggie.

I think it was put into place about a year ago. It's largely a spam-fighting measure, because older posts are much bigger targets for spam. (We actually still get spam even from the closed threads — some of the dumber spambots use the Report Post button instead if there's no Reply button, so the spammers report themselves.) A lot of blogs do the same thing. I personally like the side effect of preventing necros, but if you really feel like something ought to go in an existing thread, feel free to PM a local mod. We can reopen them.

Chuckit has the right info, as always. If you need to continue an older thread, PM the friendly local mod. Remember to include a generous bribe. He/she can bump the thread, which opens it back up.

The zombie protection kicks in at 1 year in most of the forums, well past the 6-month rule. This gives flexibility to the local staff, so they can allow longer bumps, or persecute & torture lock the thread after the fact.

There are a few exceptions. Market has zombie protection right at the 6 months. Feedback, Team, Developer, GUI & Delicious Monster get protection at 2 years. Each of those might have long-running threads or issues to revisit.

Thanks, Glenn. I will contact a mod in the future, if there's a good reason reopen a thread.

I apologize, reader50. I honestly don't know how that happened.

Maybe I'm in love with Glenn ?

I hate to have to break it to you this way, but I'm taken. And my wife isn't particularly "open minded" in that regard. Sorry...
