I have a sincere problem with this editor's last editorial! Why place someone over a site when that someone doesn't like the site's product? I can't believe that you can't find someone that works at MacNN that likes the iBook! The iBook is the number one selling notebook model for a reason, and it is not hype! The editor of this site should like and use the iBook!
As for his negative comments,
1) No floppy drive
Over the last year Mac users have learned to live without floppy drives, with only new PowerBook users getting floppy drives, which will not be continued come Jan 2000.
2) Weight
I supposed he uses a 5 pound attache case around his PowerBook, the iBook is built rugged enough to not need a case. Thereby, saving the weight of the 5 pound case! Which really weighs more?
3) FireWire
Firewire circuitry exists on the iBook motherboard. There just isn't any ports. After the PowerBooks get FireWire, and drop the SCSI ports, expect iBooks shipping to have FireWire ports quickly afterwards. Again, in Jan 2000. It is foolish to believe that Apple will ship FireWire iBooks before PowerBooks.
4) Styling
Wishing for graphite and ice. I personally like BlueBerry better. Colors are great. You should see the awes I get with my iBook! I'd like to see all the iMac colors on iBooks.
5) 32 MB of factory installed RAM
Well, I'd admit it is low, but many iBook users are surviving with only 32 MB. He should be teaching us how to survive with only 32 MB, not demanding more RAM as absolutely needed! 64 MB soon will not be enough RAM for him either. It takes a minimum of 96 MB to run VPC, and the newer 3D games need more.
I had no problems writing this post with my iBook! It fells great. The keyboard is great. the function key and assignable function keys arte great. The screen is great. The trackpad is great. 4 Stars rating from me. Well worth the $1600.
I had my say, it seems ridiculous to have someone who doesn't like the product running the web site!
