Ok, I'm open to suggestions here. Everyone once in a while, we get feedback on the organization of news updates on the page. This is how it currently works. I am open to hearing how people think it should may/should work.
We currently have a top stories section along with news "editions" which contain news items in reverse chronological order of new stores (or stories with important updates). The editions correspond to the times of day (ET) that the item is posted * and become 'final' when the next one starts. However, as noted, the items in each edition are listed in reverse chronological order.
The problem we run into, is the 'top stories' section. We feel we need to highlight certain stories and keep them there for a certain period of time so everybody sees them--these are the important ones that the once-a-day reader should not miss. As a top story comes in or develops, we add it to top of the 'top stories.' So the section is mostly reverse chronological (there are exceptions that may drop the new top story to #2 or #3 in the section but no lower than that.)
On some special days, we include keynote coverage or other special news on the main page by separating it with a line above the top stories. This news i s late-breaking and pertinent to that day. It means that we are working on consolidating the coverage to another page or a separate report and have not yet been able to do so.
Sometimes late evening updates are pushed over to the next days' top stories, if the current list is 'full' and we expect the story is important enough to 'stay around' for a while.
Those are the current guidelines. Again, I am open to discussion and ideas about how to improve the organization.
