I'm 19, and I'm into computers, but I dont know what to do. I've taken Electronics all through high school, so I'm all good with circuits and stuff, but what should I do? I want to work for or with apple. Should I go into hardware design? Programming? MARKETING (Freaking morons! PUT IN 3DFX STUFF AND DUMP ATI!)
Any ideas?

In all honesty Ca$h, A couple of courses in College in the business area. Maybe entrepreneurship?
I look at it this way, anything I'm involved is potential business, and you seem to be involved in modifying your mac right?
My suggestion: you may very well be able to fill in gaps where Apple products fall short. You have a talent for finding the bad in iMac and that is a really good thing on your part. You also are really good at finding ways to get around and improving Apple products that are normally described as not upgradable. There is competition, companies that offer CD-R's for iMacs, faster chips, bigger drives, etc., so there is obviously money to be made.
you build up a supplier contacts (comp parts, packaging etc) you get any licensing and permits required, set up shop and start hacking away. When you get something viably marketable, you start production and let the ball roll. You would probably make a lot more money if you went to College for a couple of years first. There are a lot of things that you will learn in College that will make you smack your forehead as you say "Well that's something I could have tried while I tried to run a start up co. last year!".
I'll stop dragging on now, good luck, I hope this was of some sort of help Ca$h

FYI, Apple and ATI seem to have a contract so that ATI is the sole supplier of graphics cards to Apple, kinda hard to break that (read apple insider)... so, the radeons will help out a bit...

DAM is right cash. You should go to school first. it may also help you decide what you want to do. I would stay away from marketing if I were you. You seem to lack a certain something in your approach, if you know what I mean. Take no offense, but you can be like nails on a chalk board. I would look into information systems. There is cash to be made. I think no atter what, hardware will always progress, but I think the big thing in the future will be finding better, faster, and more efficient ways to move data. What's the fun of being the first on your block with a holographic display if you have to wait for your 3D porn to arrive via 56K? Don't do what I did, which is to finish school and THEN realize you have no interest in doing what your degree is in. Twice.... I'm looking at degree number three now, if i can just decide what I want to do.

How about Networking? Seems that the big money's over there at the moment and in the forseeable future. Your Electronics experience should help you out in that field. However, you'll need to also look into some Windows and Linux too (cross-platform networking *should* get you a job). Automating workflows would also seem to be a good field to enter. Whatever you decide, all the best!

You guys sorta missed what I was saying. I want to work FOR apple. Make their products better. And I definatly dont' want to make upgrades... remember microconversions? Yeeesh. And networking is ok, but you really arent creating anything.
I want to be a big wig in charge of decisions... NO ATI! HAHHAHA! >

Maybe you ought to just drink a whole lot of beer and fool around with a whole lot of college girls first, just like every other 19 year old out there. Worry about a career later, cause now its time to Parrrrtttttyyyyyy!!!

What aspect do you want to make better? Hardware (internal)? Hardware (external)? software?
If it's the look - go for industrial design. Internal hardware, start with an EE.

Hey Tony,
Remember, we've seen your photograph, so I reckon the girls are gonna have to drink a whole lot o'beer before you're ever gonna get to fool around.

Hey Ca$h,
I can tell that you are a wiz with mods, so my advice would be to go to college and get an Electrical Engineering degree. Use federal student loans if you have to...after all...EE majors get rEEch!
You may not be able to work for Apple but you can still have the credentials to work for another reputable computer company. Also, if you get a good foundation, you could open your own Authorized Apple Repair Service Center...then offer customers "custom modifications" Just look at all the threads dealing with mods...the demand is out there. Go for it!
