What about it folks? Chat line? Anybody out there who'd like that? So there's always resources handy in case of emergencies? And cool people to chat with.

There's actually a UBB hack that exists for this, but alas it's PC-only (it features both text and voice chatting--it's the voice part that's incompatible, and which makes the text part not function either).

We could always implement a Java chat like AppleInsider features. Let us know if you'd like that. If there's enough demand, we'll gladly add it.

Yeah, go for it.
This was mentioned a while back, several times, and nothing was ever done about it... why is that?

The idea sounds interesting.

I have not registered at AI, and only registered users can get into the chat. At least that was how it was the last time I got curious.

Could someone post a pic of what the AI version looks like? If it looks OK then I would be all for it.

Why don't ppl just log onto Undernet or some other server and make a #MacNN channel? This would be good interaction for everyone and hopefully ppl will start to understand how other members of this forum think. I see that there is some misunderstanding or misinterpretation on what ppl think is humor and what is not. Talking real-time is the best way to uncover ppl's true thought process.

just an idea,

So, now that we have 100% of people who responded in agreement that it should happen, we just need to get another 40 posts, and give it 2 months before it will be taken 'into consideration'...

No, it's already been taken into consideration and we do plan on implementing it. It's just a question of when. The staff of MacNN (which is relatively small) already puts in 12-14 work days, daily, just to provide readers like you with the content and services that you desire.

Food for thought.

Heh, sorry
I was in a bad mood when I posted that... just venting.
I do hope you realise everyone here greatly appreciates the work of the MacNN staff... me included... I don't say it much, but I do appreciate it.
And without you we know this BBS wouldn't be here...

Man, if ever we geet a chat area, there should definitely be a beer room! All this talking about beer in the Lounge is making me thirsty!

Cipher13,

Why not? A «no holds barred» kinda place. Hehehe... where the seniors vent it out! All willingly and uncensored. Maybe a private club house? Most respectable chat places have them...

Hell yeah, great idea
If a chat 'room' is implemented, it has to have a 'beer room'... wouldn't be complete without one

OK, I went on an AI raid and got the pics. Registration is not required, either I misremembered that or it has changed.

It loads as a Java applet that opens a pop-off window. Once the Chat window has opened, you can browse elsewhere with the main browser window.

Under OS 9 it worked in Netscape & iCab (IE not tested). It did not work in Mozilla 18.
Under OS X I could not get it to work in Omni, in iCab, or in IE for X. Unless I missed something, no native X browser will work. Are there any other X native browsers that I don't know about? (Fizzilla is outdated & based on an earlier Mozilla build - and Mozilla did not work under OS 9 anyway)
BTW: The pics were taken in Netscape for OS 9 using the Aqua Appearance Theme.

There are two panes: "Users" ...

... and "Rooms"

Note the circled "MacNN Chat", apparently we are going to share our chat system with AI.

The "Padded Cell" chat room is obviously for myself and selected other malcontents on the Fora.

See you in Chat. At least when I am running in OS 9.

...if we're lucky.
There were a fair few people in there during the last Macworld or whatever it was though... that was good.
I really hope this gets implemented, if possible...

If anyone uses IRC on Undernet, come into #macnn, a place for Macnn d00ds to meet and do stuff.

What about hosting a hotline server? Tell me if you like the idea and I will set it up...
